    Wealthy landowner Bart Jason (Ed Asner) hires gunman Cole Thornton (John Wayne) to scare the MacDonald family from their land, but Sheriff J.P. Harrah (Robert Mitchum) talks him out of it. Thornton fires back at young Luke MacDonald, who kills himself before Thornton can explain. Six months later Thornton learns that another gang was hired to do the job and returns to El Dorado with a new friend to prevent it.
