Free Heart Scan - SCAM
You Ask: What's taking so long to get my scan results?
Updated: Mar 13, 2011 10:45 PM PDT Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -
Early diagnosis is key in fighting so many diseases. That's why a Las Vegas woman decided to get a body scan done that would put her mind at ease. But doing so, brought on a whole new worry and that's when she emailed Action News.
"He said this is your health you're not buying a tv you have two beautiful children you want to be alive for them," said Tamiko Schrum.
That's the line that Tamiko Schrum says convinced her to sign a contract with Heart Check America. She visited their office on Sahara near Buffalo after getting a telemarketer call in February for a free scan.
"The heart scan was important because my father died from heart disease I've had a stroke myself and my mother has had several," said Tamiko.
Tamiko says she sat through hours of promotional videos featuring celebrities explaining how the scan was so beneficial. She says they even mentioned they were backed by the Better Business Bureau. Concerned about her health Tamiko opted for a 10 year plan that included a full body scan every other year. The cost, $2,500.
"He said don't worry about it if you have bad credit, no credit we can finance you," said Tamiko.
Tamiko signed a contract on February 17th and got scanned. But after looking at what she called a beat up machine she became suspicious. So she went home and checked out a few web sites.
"There were so many complaints," said Tamiko.
On Ripoff Report, a testimonial out of Colorado about a misleading sales person and incomplete reports. In Las Vegas a testimonial about denied promise of refunds.
Their grades with the Better Business Bureau concerned her even more: an "F" in Colorado with 7 complaints over contract, sales practice and delivery issues. 4 of which the company failed to respond to.
In Washington DC, they have an "F" with one complaint regarding customer service issues that they also failed to respond to.
In Illinois, a D - with 12 complaints, one of which wasn't responded to. They don't have a rating with the Southern Nevada Better Business Bureau but there are 4 complaints, 1 of which they failed to resolve.
After looking at all those online reports, Tamiko canceled her contract February 18th.
Within days the company mailed her a cd of her scan, but the only paperwork inside explains how to open the files. The files aren't labeled, making it confusing for her to tell what she's looking at. There was an important document missing.
"They showed me some different paperwork that was supposed to come with it explaining the different levels of how my heart's valves were clogged," said Tamiko.
Tamiko says she was told that paperwork would be with the cd and when it wasn't she called the office to ask where it was. She says she was told it was coming. Still frustrated, Tamiko emailed Action News.
We called Heart Check America and talked to their Director of Customer Service, Leonard Timpone.
"There was a copy sent to her on the third of March and another copy sent to her yesterday by me personally I don't know why she hasn't received it," said Leonard.
Tamiko is waiting for those results so she can make an appointment with her own doctor. As for the company's low ratings with the BBB and similar complaints to Tamiko's, Leonard said ," I don't know what that "F" means. I remember when we went to school some teachers gave an "F" and we could have had a 90 score. I don't know."
Timpone says they do work to resolve each complaint they get from the BBB. Tamiko says all this has taught her to research a company better before signing on the dotted line.
"By the time I left there I had such a bad feeling already," said Tamiko.
We're going to keep in touch with Tamiko to see if she gets her results.
The company did give her a refund of $1,800 but she still had to pay for the scans she already got. Timpone says every year their scans help save lives because people who didn't have symptoms went to Heart Check America and found health problems.
