US Is "The Only Real Guarantor" Of European Security, Claims Polish PM

"The only real guarantor of security in Europe, including the eastern flank of NATO, is the U.S." - Polish PM Mateusz Morawiecki

Perhaps "Fort Trump" is making progress? Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said Sunday in reaction to continued EU discussion of French and German to plans for a "European Army" that the United States is the only guarantor of European defense and security. Like the idea of "Fort Trump" first floated by Polish President Andrzej Duda in September during a White House visit, these latest statements out of Poland will be music to the US president's ears.
“We would like Europe as a whole to strengthen its military potential,” Morawiecki told a Polish public broadcaster from Brussels immediately after Europe’s leaders approved the Brexit deal negotiated with the U.K. “But at the same time today we emphasize that the only real guarantor of security in Europe, including the eastern flank of NATO, is the U.S.,” he said according to Bloomberg.

Morawiecki called for “a strong Poland in a strong European Union” and emphasized that Poland is both pro-American and pro-European. The two countries have been rapidly bolstering their military ties over the past few years in the face of what both perceive as expanding Russian influence.

Last March Warsaw and Washington signed a $4.75 billion deal to transfer Raytheon's Patriot missile defense system in a major step to modernize its forces against Russia, the single largest such procurement in Poland's history. Meanwhile completion of the separate NATO operated Lockheed Martin made ground-based Aegis ballistic missile defense system is not set to be in operation until after 2020 due to technical delays.
The Polish prime minister's statements come after early this month French President Emmanuel Macron proposed that Europe extricate itself from US foreign policy and security dependence by forming a common army that would be more than just symbolic, but could legitimately defend European interests and territory.
While calling for greater independence in European defense Macron had managed to take aim at both Russia and the United States in a Nov. 6 interview, saying “We have to protect ourselves with respect to China, Russia and even the US.” He proposed that European leaders create a “real European army” not only to better defend the continent against Russia, but also to extricate French and European policy from that of the United States.
“We won’t protect Europeans if we don’t decide to have a real European army,” Macron said. “We must have a Europe that can defend itself on its own without relying only on the United States,” he asserted.
A week following Macron's controversial interview German Chancellor Angela Merkel appeared to second the idea that Europe should work to form an army, saying before European Parliament: “The times in which we could unconditionally rely on others are over.”
But such a proposal will remain wishful thinking so long as key strategically located former Warsaw Pact countries like Poland refuse to play ball.

Meanwhile, France and Germany march in lock-step towards a single European Union army

Poland Scorns EU Army, Insists America Is ‘Only Real Guarantor of Security in Europe’

Poland is resisting the single European Army being pushed by Angela Merkel, Emmanuel Macron, and the EU’s chief bureaucrats, implying concern that it is alienating the continent’s security relationship with the United States of America.

“We would like Europe as a whole to strengthen its military potential,” said Polish prime minister Mateusz Morawiecki in an interview with Polish television station TVP Info, following a meeting of EU leaders in which British prime minister Theresa May’s high contentious Brexit withdrawal agreement was signed off.
“But at the same time today we emphasise that the only real guarantor of security in Europe, including the eastern flank of NATO, is the U.S.,” he added.
Poland’s conservative-populist government has been much more receptive to the Donald Trump administration in the United States since he entered office in 2017, sharing many of its concerns about mass migration and the erosion of national sovereignty by globalist organisations.
President Trump has been pushing hard for European Union member-states to begin meeting their NATO spending commitments, but leading figures in Brussels, Berlin, and Paris seem more concerned with building their own EU force than doing so.

These are the growing EU military schemes which have potential to duplicate or detract from existing NATO structures.
What’s more, current withdrawal arrangements keep us stuck in many of the EU ones, under their terms.

An integrated European military has long been a goal of establishment politicians, featuring in election manifestos for German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s political party, for example.
However, it was largely downplayed in the lead up to Britain’s 2016 referendum on the EU — which europhile politicians in the country were keen to sell to the British public as a mere “trade club”, with Brexit campaigners’ warnings on the issue rubbished by figures such as Deputy Prime Minister turned Facebook public relations man Nick Clegg, who called them a “dangerous fantasy”.
Since the Brexit vote, however, EU leaders have been much more open about their plans with Merkel delivering a speech to the European Parliament in which she called for a “real, true European army” to thunderous applause.
Globalist poster boy Emmanuel Macron has also been pushing for a single European force, appearing to suggest that it may be required to defend the continent from the United States in future.
President Trump described Macron’s statement as “very insulting”, suggesting that “perhaps Europe should first pay its fair share of NATO, which the U.S. subsidizes greatly!”
Eurosceptic groups such as Veterans for Britain are concerned that British civil servants are entangling Britain in European Defence Union which is slowly coming together despite Brexit, and despite Theresa May’s promises to the contrary.

    Angela Merkel's 'EU army' explained

Why would the German chancellor and her confrère in Paris want an army for the European Union?

    November 28, 2018
    By David Archibald

The notion proposed by France's President Macron that Europe should have its own army, and by that he meant the E.U., was promptly supported by the German chancellor. The proposal has met with incredulity and derision. The more appropriate reaction would be alarm.
Firstly, it is passing strange that these two individuals should start taking an interest in defense. Germany has let its armed forces run down to the point that it doesn't have any submarines it can put to sea, and a fraction of its fighter force is able to get into the air, with similar stories in its helicopters and other systems. Merkel has been chancellor of Germany for 13 years, so the parlous state of Germany's military reflects her priorities. There is evidence that Merkel is the fruit of a long-term influence campaign by the former East German intelligence service. Similarly, with Macron, the head of the French military quit last year after the president made a surprise €850-million cut to the country's defense budget. And now he wants to pony up for the expense of a whole new army?
And who do they expect to fight? Russia is the only power in the region, and the Russians don't have the horsepower to mount a large-scale attack. The Russian economy is only slightly larger than Australia's.
One clue is that Macron and Merkel are talking about only an army – no navy or air force. If you don't have an air force, then you don't get far on the ground. That is the first clue about whom they think the new E.U. army will be fighting. It won't be any country with an air force.
Another clue is the E.U. crackdown on private ownership of guns. The E.U. even coerced Switzerland into changing its gun laws. The E.U. restricts Swiss access to the European market to get what it wants.
The E.U. is afraid of an armed citizenry, which might rebel against the self-perpetuating regime in Brussells. E.U. bureaucrats know that their diktats with respect to immigration and other matters are deeply unpopular and that an insurrection might break up their empire. Their model in coping with that is the Austro-Hungarian empire, which was made up of a multitude of ethnicities that didn't have a common language or heritage. That empire kept order by raising military units in one ethnicity and stationing them in a province that didn't speak the language of the soldiers. This meant that orders to shoot civilians were more likely to be carried out.
The new E.U. army will be Europeans killing their fellow Europeans so that Brussells remains in charge. That is what it is all about.

EU Army Plans Advance as Germany Tells France to Give UN Security Council Seat to Brussels

Germany has told France to give its permanent seat at the UN Security Council to the European Union so that the bloc can “speak with one voice” as it advances its defence plans.

German vice chancellor and finance minister Olaf Schloz made the proposal during a speech on the future of the EU in Berlin on Wednesday claiming it would be a “bold and smart goal,” reports The Brussels Times.
“If we are to take the European Union seriously, the EU should speak with one voice within the UN Security Council. In the medium term, France’s seat could be converted to a seat for the EU.”

He also acknowledged that “France and Germany are now acting together in this particular forum,” but an eventual seat for the bloc was necessary.

Noting that there was still a “significant effort of persuasion necessary in Paris,” Mr Scholz suggested that in exchange, France could be made “the permanent EU ambassador to the United Nations.”
After the UK leaves the bloc in March 2019, France will only be the only EU member state with the permanent seat on the UN Security Council.
The UK and France are joined by the U.S., Russia, and China with ten non-permanent members whose seats are up for election every two years.
If the EU were permitted to take France’s place, like the other four permanent members of the Security Council it would have the right to veto UN resolutions.

In November 2017, the EU launched the Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) — a proto-EU army — two months after European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said the bloc needed a “fully-fledged European Defence Union” by 2025.
France and Germany have taken the lead on the unified military project after Chancellor Angela Merkel backed calls for a “real, true European army” from President Emmanuel Macron who said in early November that Europe needed its own defence force to protect itself from China, Russia, and even NATO ally and fellow permanent Security Council member the United States.
President Donald Trump called the comments “very insulting,” adding that “perhaps Europe should first pay its fair share of NATO, which the U.S. subsidizes greatly!”

President Macron later said that the recently forged “Franco-German couple” would lead Europe and stop the world “descending into chaos.”
Addressing the Bundestag, the president of France said, “the new Franco-German responsibility is to build a modern, effective, sovereign, democratic Europe.”
“We must have common defence, turn the euro into an international currency with a budget, and create a European asylum office… all of this is in front of us,” he told the German parliament.

EU Commissioner Warns of ‘War’ Should ‘Nationalists’ Win in Europe

European Commissioner for Economic and Financial Affairs Pierre Moscovici has gone on the attack once again, claiming that “war” could come to Europe should populist anti-establishment parties win in the upcoming European Parliament elections.

Mr Moscovici refused to identify any parties or politicians by name but addressed “populists” and “nationalists” at a meeting of the Centre for European Reform saying nationalists would impose a “national preference” that could both lead to the destruction of the European Union and potentially to “war,” Il Giornale reports.
“If we reintroduce divisions between us, North-South, East-West, and if national preference becomes Europe’s way of thinking, Europe will die,” Moscovici said.
“Without Europe, I’m sure the war can re-emerge here,” he added, before referencing a speech from former French President François Mitterand who claimed, “nationalism is war.”
The comments are just the latest attack on populism and populist movements by Moscovici who previously claimed Europe had a “climate that looks a lot like the 1930s,” and added, “Clearly there is no Hitler, perhapssome small Mussolini. History, as Raymond Aron used to say, is tragic. We must prevent it from sinking into its darkest hours.”
32 people are talking about this

The European Commissioner has been particularly outspoken against the Italian populist coalition government’s budget saying that the Italians present a “problem” for the political bloc.
His comments were countered by Italian Interior Minister and leader of the League Matteo Salvini who said, “EU Commissioner Moscovici, instead of censuring his France that rejects immigrants in Ventimiglia, has bombed Libya, and has broken European parameters, attacks Italy and talks about many little Mussolinis around Europe.”
Moscovici has also pushed for further federalisation in the European Union advocating for a “eurozone budget.
“Having a eurozone budget is absolutely decisive if we want to address the populist challenge, the burning question of inequalities,” he said.

German army 'could recruit EU citizens'...

    27 December 2018

Image copyright Getty Images Image caption

Germany has pledged to spend increasingly more of its budget on its military Seven years after Germany scrapped conscription, its defence chief has said employing EU citizens is "an option" to fill expert posts.
Army general inspector Eberhard Zorn said the forces had to "look in all directions in times of a lack of qualified personnel", such as doctors and IT specialists.
The armed forces have been beset by years of under-investment.
Germany aims to increase its military by 21,000 personnel by 2025.
It has also pledged to raise its defence budget from 1.2% to to 1.5% of its gross domestic product by 2024, in the face of criticism from President Donald Trump that it does not meet the Nato target of 2% of GDP.
Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen said in an interview on Thursday that 182,000 uniformed soldiers were now employed by the army, a rise of 6,500 in two years. Within seven years, that should reach 203,000.
She said the army was now made up of 12% women and this year alone one in three people applying to be an officer was a woman.

What does the defence chief propose?

Gen Zorn told the Funke newspaper group that "of course the Bundeswehr needs personnel" and the army had to "push hard for a suitable new generation", although EU citizens in uniform were "an option" to be examined only in specialist fields.
The media group said the government had already consulted EU partners and that most had reacted cautiously, particularly in Eastern Europe.

Under post-World War Two laws, soldiers in the German military have to be German.
Parliament's commissioner for the armed forces, Hans-Peter Bartels, said recruiting EU citizens was already a "kind of normality" as many soldiers already had dual nationality or an immigrant background.
According to the Funke group, more than 900 foreign citizens are already employed by the military in civilian roles.
Last month the UK said more foreign nationals would be able to join its armed forces without having lived in the country in a bid to meet a shortfall of 8,200 soldiers, sailors and air personnel.
How unprepared is the German army?

Germany aims to have 70% of its fighting capacity ready for combat at any time, but recent reports show it is falling short:

How did shortages hit Merkel's G20 trip?

The spotlight fell on military shortages late last month when Chancellor Angela Merkel had to fly to the G20 summit in Argentina by passenger plane because of a technical failure involving one of the military's two long-haul planes.

    Image copyright AFP Image caption

Chancellor Merkel's plane lost radio control as it flew over the Netherlands on 29 November and had to land in Cologne Ms Von der Leyen said one or two new long-haul planes would be bought, as the two existing planes aged 18 and 19 were too few.

The technical failure involving Mrs Merkel's government plane has been blamed on German airline Lufthansa, according to a report in Der Spiegel.
When the pilots tried to reboot the A340's electronics during an in-flight power failure they were unable to restart the radio.
According to a confidential report cited by Spiegel, the pilots had not been informed of new instructions to restart the radio after Lufthansa's technical subsidiary installed a digital communications system in 2009.
    Why is the military underfunded?

For such a big country it may appear strange to have a relatively ill-equipped army.
But after reunification the Bundeswehr gradually shrank in size from 486,000 in 1990 to 168,000 in 2015.
There was no perceived military threat after the Cold War and cuts to defence spending continued until 2014.
German forces played key but limited Nato roles in Kosovo and Afghanistan, but that was before two key developments: a resurgent Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014 and so-called Islamic State seized territory in Syria in 2013.
The culture of underfunding changed and last month an opinion poll suggested 43% of Germans agreed on the need for greater defence spending, up from 32% in 2017.
How big should Germany's army be?

The defence minister says that all depends on the security situation.
Germany pledged hundreds of troops for a Nato presence in the Baltics and Poland this year, but it faces other threats too.
A month ago the army was targeted by cyber-attackers, possibly emanating from Russia, and some of the new spending will go on cyber security.
