BIRMINGHAM, Michigan (June 26) - The United States should aim to have manufacturing jobs comprise at least 20 percent of total employment, about twice what it is now, General Electric Co. Chairman and CEO Jeffrey Immelt said Friday.

Speaking to the Economic Club of Detroit, Immelt outlined what he called an American industrial renewal driven by emphasis on manufacturing and exports, investment in new technology and research and development, innovations in clean energy and affordable health care.

The U.S. has faltered as it has moved toward a service- and consumption-based economy, Immelt said. He singled out financial services, which he said comprise 45 percent of earnings of companies on the Standard & Poor's 500 index, up from 10 percent a quarter-century earlier.

American manufacturing can be reinvigorated through investment in research and development, infrastructure and training, and by fostering public-private partnerships, Immelt said.

There is nothing "predestined or inevitable about the industrial decline of the U.S., if we as a people are prepared to reverse it," he said.

"We would do much better to observe the example of China. They've been growing fast because they invest in technology and they make things. They have no intention of letting up in manufacturing in order to evolve into a service economy.

"They know where the money is and they aim to get there first," Immelt said. "America has to get back in that game."

Earlier Friday, Immelt announced GE is developing a $100 million research and development facility in Wayne County's Van Buren Township, 25 miles (40 kilometers) west of Detroit. About 1,200 scientists and engineers initially will be hired to develop manufacturing technologies.

So how many H-1B's do you suppose will be hired ? Do they plan to bring jobs back to America that they have outsourced ?

Sorry but when GE seems to care they have a "Hidden Agenda". IMHO

Well, the decline was predestined in accordance with the elites' playbook, and if they can do anything about it, it will be inevitable but that aside I do agree with him.

This can be stopped and the people of this country are fully prepared to reverse it because we want and need those jobs.

But, I would also say that we NEED companies who are willing to do the right thing in bringing those jobs back and give them to American citizens instead of illegal aliens and visa holders.

Will GE give those jobs to us?

I can see manufacturing jobs coming back to the USA soon. Why? We'll produce the same products that used to be made here BUT for wages 50% less than what they were 20-30 yrs ago.

I think that was the plan all along.

Like he has all kinds of carbon-credits investments! I think GE's investments are why they don't care if NBC, MSNBC and that ilk are losing viewers monthly.

People want the news, not the Obama fluff that goes on with too many cable news stations. Today and yesterday it was MJ. Look at all the news the people missed, like the Cap & Trade vote.
What a sad country we are currently.

The jobs are going to 3r world countries like Mexico and China to redistribute the wealth.

Yes, they will profit, but don't underestimate how obvious the starvation of the world's best golden goose (the American middle class) has become, even to the elite who aren't suffering. There is still a great deal of innovation and manufacturing going on in America, with more to come. Getting back to making and doing things is the only thing that will save America, and even the dunderheads in Washington and Davos are starting to read the memo.

Out a few miles east of me, on I-70 out in farm country is a sign announcing a project: http://www.transportcolorado.com/ It was supposed to be a shipping hub for the new world order, where goods and workers would be shipped in from all over the world, and we Americans would somehow, mysteriously, go on buying, buying and buying. No one seemed to have any good theories as to how.

The sign's been there for nearly ten years now without a single shovel of dirt being turned for the project. Reminds me of Shelly's poem, Ozymandias.

More recently, a proposal was submitted to repurpose the land for this project and make it into a Nascar race track instead (like they are giving up on the Flat World): http://www.2thedeuce.com/news/kdvr-auro ... 0677.story
