Girl carries secret baby to hospital, still attached

17 y/o Girl carries secret baby to hospital, still attached

8-pound, 3-ounce boy healthy, "eating like a champ," doctor says

Xochitl Parra was getting ready for school when the contractions began

"I felt his head coming, so I sit down and pushed so he could come out," Parra says

Teen says pregnancy kept secret because she feared being kicked out of her home.

LONG BEACH, California (AP) -- A 17-year-old girl gave birth secretly at home, then walked four blocks to a hospital with the baby still attached by its umbilical cord.

Xochitl Parra holds newborn Alejandro, as her sister, left, a nurse and Parra's mother pose with her Saturday.

"I was just a little nervous" when the labor began, Xochitl Parra said Friday from St. Mary Medical Center as she cradled her 8-pound, 3-ounce son, Alejandro.

The boy was normal and "eating like a champ," said Dr. Jose Perez, director of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

The teenager said she was alone and taking a shower around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday to get ready for school. Then the contractions took over.

"I felt his head coming, so I sit down and pushed so he could come out," she said.

Parra did not call 911 because the home phone was disconnected, and she did not want to wake the neighbors because it was so early. Instead, she wrapped the baby, got dressed and went to the hospital on foot.

"I started walking and jogging to the hospital," she said.

The teen came into the hospital lobby and asked for help, Perez said.

"She still had the placenta and the baby was still attached, so of course everyone said, 'Don't move!' " he said.

Perez praised the girl for taking quick action.

"They could have bled to death; thank God that didn't happen," the doctor said. "She was very clever. She knew what to do. She wrapped the baby up and walked over here."

Parra, a sophomore at Long Beach Poly High, said she kept her pregnancy a secret because she was afraid her mother would "kick me out of the house." Her mother has now accepted the situation and is going to help the teen care for the baby so she can continue attending school, Parra said.

    Perez called the outcome "heartwarming."

"We hear so much negative with teenagers throwing their babies in the Dumpsters," he said. "This baby is fine, and hopefully there will be a happy ending with the extended family."

I am going to be really honest and brutal here....my dog...the first time it gave birth....ran like a mad dog around the house with 2 puppies, still attached and bouncing like balls behind her....those dogs survived and she gave birth to more puppies safely. Trust me....at my first birth....I was ready to jump from a 2 story building....and I had some knowledge as to what was going on. HOSPITALS aren't where babies come from....HOSPITALS aren't the answer......teaching people about the basic functions of their human body is. Heck fire....women birthed babies in woods and boats and grain fields and deserts.....they didn't have hospitals to save them. I have no sympathy or a gold pitcher for her.....they had 8yr old girls birthing babies in the latest church scam......think they knew any more what was going on than this one?

Eating like a champ? Please.....that irritates me more than I can say.....that's what babies do....it's not a surprise!!!!!!! Oh and gosh darn.....It was breathing!!!!!! What else did you expect? If it didn't do that it's a problem....it's note worthy when somone responds to that.....not when it's NORMAL!!!!!!!!!

It's a wonderful miricle....but this sounds like a normal birth and pretty much not special except an illegal kid did it and it makes a story.

I mean seriously....what did people do before school and all......did they hide their girls from sex and child birth? Were women really left not knowing anything and then suddenly they birthed something? Out of NOWHERE and had no idea when where or how it came? And then kept it a secret for ions from all women? Please!!!!!

I have said this before....are people responding to ACTUAL outcomes or what they were told? Are they illegal because they tried and were refused....or just assumed they would be rejected and went the illegal route? I was one who was pregnant as a kid....swore my parents would KILL me....but they didn't....dissappointed, yes, angry at first, yes....but not many were thrown in the streets and killed here.....we don't stone people here and kill people for things like this. One mistake my parents would give me.....after that baby....you are on your own.

I find it hard to believe that her own mother couldn't tell that her own daughter was pregnant, unless she was really really fat and wore mumu's all the time. Is the family legal? Is this just ANOTHER ANCHOR BABY?
