Some manufacturers have discovered that the savings which result from outsourcing are not as substantial as they expected them to be. One reason for that is that, as General Electric learned, American workers will suggest better ways to assemble products and even better design elements for those products.
Also, local production makes it easy to get changes to market quickly. So an innovation can be accomplished more quickly. This seems to be an advantage when producing consumer products, such as refrigerators.
