A group planning to install a Confederate flag across from Alabama State University in Montgomery is halfway to its fundraising goal of $3,000.

The Tallassee Tribune reported First Capital Flaggers along with the Tallassee Chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and Tallassee Armory Guards are supporting the effort to install a 30-50-foot flagpole near the historically black university.

An unnamed Montgomery physician is said to have donated the property where the flagpole would be installed.

According to the report, the flag will mark the "first capitol of the Confederacy."

ASU hasn't commented on the plans.
