MEXICALI, Mexico – Gunmen ambushed a convoy of vehicles carrying a top security official in this border town, authorities said.
At least 10 assailants in bulletproof vests shot and threw grenades Tuesday morning at the convoy of Manuel Diaz Lerma, who oversees the police forces of Baja California state, according to state Attorney General Antonio Martinez.

Diaz Lerma's bulletproof vehicle escaped the attack, but another vehicle carrying bodyguards was perforated by bullets and shrapnel, injuring three officers, Martinez said.

Mexicali is due south of Calexico, Calif., 110 miles east of San Diego.

The ambush and the murder the same day of a police officer in the violent border town of Nuevo Laredo near Laredo, Texas, were the latest in a series of attacks on Mexican security officials.
