Harry Belafonte, Dictator Obama

Turning America into a Third World backwater

Harry Belafonte of “Day-O” fame has a novel suggestion for Barack Obama: He wants the President to imprison those who oppose his agenda “like a Third World dictator.” You see, that’s the problem with progressives. Scratch one lightly and you’ll always find a totalitarian enamored of fascist methods just beneath the surface.

Belafonte, who is no stranger to controversy, is also a big fan of Hugo Chavez, Fidel Castro, Robert Mugabe and the notorious Rosenbergs, who were executed by the US government back in 1953 for essentially helping the Soviet Union develop nuclear weapons. And while there was much uncertainty about the Rosenbergs’ guilt, KGB documents released after the collapse of the Soviet Union, revealed they did indeed pass on nuclear secrets to Stalin.

One of the problems with having celebrities make political pronouncements is that there is no guarantee that their pronouncements are anything more than badly reasoned, knee jerk utterances completely at odds with the accepted standards of our culture. Belafonte is a case in point. To see the world through his window, America is still living under some Jim Crow system that badly needs excision, even if there is abundant evidence to the contrary. Belafonte has been on a lifelong quest to turn America into some kind of Gulag and now that a black Progressive President is in power, he’s rooting for him to make the move.

And it’s ironic in the extreme that Belafonte wants Obama to use the same “Gestapo of Homeland Security,” with which he demonized George W. Bush. It’s amazing what a little color can do for long held views.

There’s no denying that Belafonte is a very talented man. He’s a renowned singer and a respected actor, but a sharp political mind, he is not. Trouble is if too many people of Belafonte’s ilk are capable of wielding influence, this magnificent nation will be forever lost.

Now that this administration is ensconced in Washington for four more years, there is a palpable danger of the American people losing their liberty. And while a lot of Americans will gladly trade their liberties for government munificence, I strongly believe that the majority of Americans would prefer to have the opportunity that was given to Belafonte rather than food stamps and a mediocre and meaningless existence.

Ironically, the way Belafonte would like things to be would deprive Americans of the opportunities for success with which he was blessed and would impose upon them a cruel and heartless regime.

As with all totalitarian systems, locking up the President’s opponents would only be a start. Soon they would come for those who questioned the wisdom of some policies and then for those who advocated different policies. And in the end they would likely come for Belafonte.

I’m sure old Harry’s pronouncements come from a desire to do good. He once stated that if he could write his own epitaph it would simply say “Harry Belafonte, patriot.” I think a better epitaph might be “Harry Belafonte, singer,” or “actor,” or “banana purveyor.” But “patriot” would be a stretch.
