Haunting Photos of the Abandoned Winter Olympics Facilities
Haunting Photos of the Abandoned 1984 Winter Olympics Facilities
PUBLISHED ON FEB 17TH, 2014 /
In 1984, Sarajevo hosted the Winter Olympics. Just a decade later, the region was torn apart by a bitter years-long conflict, leading to widespread death and suffering. One not-so-familiar effect of this war was the toll it took on the Olympic infrastructure which had been built not that long ago. Today, these structures stand as a visual reminder of how quickly things can change.

While these photos offer a stunning glimpse of the decayed grounds from the 1984 Winter Olympics, it’s important to also remember how devastating the 1990s war was for the region. TheSiege of Sarajevo was the longest siege of a capital city in the history of modern warfare. The sports complex built for the 1984 Winter Olympics was utilized as a graveyard due to high casualties. The story of the 1984 Olympics doesn’t have the happiest ending, but it’s definitely a story worth knowing.

Abandoned Venues From The 2004 Athens Olympics [Photos]

Eight years after Greece spent ~$15 billion to stage the 2004 Summer Olympics, some of those once-gleaming venues are crumbling. The economy is a part of it, but so is the fact that many of these venues were built only for sports with little local interest (like softball), and now have no use.
A number of Greek officials admitted to the AFP that there was a lack of planning, and no one considered what they would be used for after the Games.
Despite all that, many of the venues from the 2004 Games are still going strong. The Olympic Stadium, Olympic Village, media center, and a few small-scale sports arenas have all found tenants.
But still, the aquatics center, beach volleyball arena, and softball arena are all literally falling apart. In addition, the massive Helliniko Olympic Complex where many events were held has been abandoned, and is in desperate need of private investors, according to AFP.
The photos of these venues are stunning, and a stern warning to future host cities of the importance of long-term planning.
