House passes first hurdle in health care

Terms of the debate are set soon after the President's visit to the Hill

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama's health care initiative has cleared its first big hurdle in the House, with lawmakers voting to advance the debate.

The House voted 242-192 in favor of a must-pass procedural measure setting the terms for the debate. All 177 Republicans voted to block the debate.

With Obama urging them on in a rare personal visit to Capitol Hill, Democrats pushed toward a final vote late Saturday on the bill, which would reshape the U.S. health care system and extend coverage to millions of the uninsured.

Obama said now is the time for Congress to "answer the call of history" and approve the legislation.

After meeting for nearly an hour with House Democrats, Obama went to the White House Rose Garden and said opportunities like passing a major health overhaul "come around maybe once in a generation."

Earlier Saturday, after emerging from a closed-door meeting with the president, Speaker Nancy Pelosi predicted passage of the bill later in the day, adding, “We will pass health care reform.â€

I expect that some Democrats will abstain or walk off the floor during the vote in an effort to save their reputations and careers from this travesty.

The traitors that vote against the American people's wishes for a better solution for health care will be severely marked for life.

I do not think they have the votes to pass this monstrosity but if they do pass it...we should all see that every last one of them who votes for it is voted out of office.

MSNBC left the part about illegal aliens receiving billions in taxpayer benefits under this bill out.... Imagine that. MSNBC is sooo very biased.

I heard all they need is 218 votes to pass this bill. I have been emailing til it hurts. But I am beginning to think it dosnt matter because they will pass this bill whether or not they hear from us.

I guess I’ll be the first to be fined and imprisoned for failure to comply. I am currently insured by my employer and wife’s employer. When I lose my insurance because of this legislation I refuse to buy government mandated insurance. I refuse to pay the government penalties and fines as they try to force me to purchase a government product I don’t approve of. I further refuse to allow the government to mandate to me what is satisfactory health care insurance. I AS A FREE AMERICAN WILL NOT BE DICTATED TO BY A CORRUPT GOVERNMENT.

Exactly!! Throw the bums who voted for this travesty that wants to send Americans to jail for up to 5 years and fine them up to $250,000 for refusing to buy one of these stupid over-priced plans or pay the tax penalty for refusing to do so, do not deserve to live in the United States let alone represent the people of the United States in the US Congress.

They're authoritarian tyrannical socialist-globalist-communists turning our country into a Health Care Gulagville. They must be stopped.

I stand with you dragonfire. I've already posted the same commitment against this destruction of our liberty on another forum. I will not be told when to buy health insurance, what type of health insurance to buy and I will not pay a tax penalty or fine for refusing to do so. They'll have to build a prison to house me and deal with my civil rights, which I can assure you will be many and long during my prison stay. They will rue the day they tried to tell this Daughter of the American Revolution to buy health insurance against her will.
