PEORIA, Ariz. - Peoria police are looking for a father suspected of running down his daughter because she was becoming too "westernized" and was not living according to their traditional Iraqi values.

Peoria police say 48-year-old Faleh Hassan Almaleki of Glendale allegedly ran his daughter down Tuesday at an Arizona Department of Economic Security parking lot in Peoria.

"When I walked out the door I saw two ladies on the ground, so my first thought was some kind of domestic dispute," says witness Synthia Diaz.

The victim, 20-year-old Noor Faleh Almaleki of Surprise, is hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

A second woman, Noor Almaleki's roommate, was also injured. She's identified as 43-year-old Amal Edan Khalaf, also of Surprise. Khalaf has what are described as non-life threatening injuries.

Faleh Almaleki was last seen driving a grey or silver 2000 Jeep grand Cherokee, Arizona license ADS-9192. He has not yet been apprehended.

Family and friends told Peoria investigators that Almaleki was mad and threatened his daughter for adopting Western ways. Almaleki and his family had moved to Glendale from Iraq.

Daddy seems to forget he is in America now and we don't put up with that sexist crap!

If he doesn't like "westernization" why is he hiding out here instead of being a man and helping his own country? Was he one of Saddam's buddies?

Hope she recovers. If she dies, he should get the death penalty. Does AZ have the death penalty in cases of premediation? I hope so!

Watching Latino in America on CNN last night, I was amazed at how many parents of Latino heritage were forcing it on the kids. A couple (he a Puerto Rican and she from the Dominican Republic) moved to Charlotte, NC. They spoke English at home bringing up their sons, and the kids were American teenagers, but mom and dad had to haul them to the old neighborhood in NY to get in touch with the Latino culture. This is not the fabric of a nation that accepts all from all over the world. It should be you are American first, and if you want to embrace your parent's heritage, do so out of curiosity, not be forced to.

Latino in America: the Boot Strap story
8:00 pm By la Macha · Media| media justice

21 Oct 2009 As you watch the Latino in America tonight, I thought you might enjoy this preview/critique of the show from Color Lines.

Take the story of Cindy Garcia. Having once ditched high school classes, Cindy is now trying to avoid becoming one of the 70 percent of students who don’t graduate from her Los Angeles high school. Although the school board president admits that a school meant to handle 1,500 students actually serves 4,800 students, CNN anchor Soledad O’Brien focuses on Cindy’s real challenge: her family responsibilities. She has a mom who needs her to translate and help at the family store and a young niece and baby brother to take care of. When she ends up pregnant, we know now presumably what Cindy’s real hardship will be.

What’s going to help Cindy finish high school?

O’Brien could have suggested an overhaul of the education system. She could have analyzed the impact of the more recent and severe budget cuts for students. She could have examined why Cindy’s stepfather is in jail (prison industrial complex anyone?) or what the state of reproductive health education is at Cindy’s school, where a number of Latina girls are facing unplanned pregnancies.

But O’Brien skipped these questions and the real world solutions.

We’re told instead is that what Cindy needs to make it is grit, focus, and hard work. In short: her own bootstraps.
Ok? That applies to everyone, what makes Cindy the exception to the rule? The arrogance of people who believe they are entitled to get everything they want is not helping them.

Overhaul the education system for Cindy? Yeah, sure, right on it.

Here is part of the blodders comment further down, that had me laughing so hard:

[quote]I think it wouldn’t have taken that much to let the viewers know just small things like “[b]how underfunded education systems are especially in latino populated regionsâ€
