HAMILTON - A local immigrant support group is concerned the recent crackdown on illegal immigration will cause a disconnect between immigrants and law enforcement.

"There's been a lot of controversy in Butler County as it relates to immigrants," said Jessica Donohue-Dioh, a coordinator for the Alliance for Immigrant Women.

The alliance was formed in 2001 as a way for battered immigrant women to seek protection against the person abusing them. Since its inception, the alliance has provided advocacy for immigrant victims while providing relevant safety material in eight different languages.

However, Dioh said that the alliance is concerned about basic public safety issues.

Consequently, the alliance is hosting a press conference at 10 a.m. today, March 24, at the Harry T. Wilks Conference Center at Miami University Hamilton to address these issues. The Hamilton Police Department is participating in the event, Dioh said.

She said the alliance does not make a political statement about immigration reform. Rather, it's concerned that immigrants who are the victim of crimes or have information about crimes aren't coming forward because they are scared.

"That puts the entire community at risk," she said.
