Investigators probe 800 birds found in drug raid

PHELAN, Calif. — Authorities are investigating whether 800 birds found in a San Bernardino County home during a drug raid were connected to an illegal cockfighting ring.
Sheriff's department spokeswoman Cindy Beavers says the birds were discovered in the Phelan home during a search that resulted in the arrest of three men Thursday.
The birds were removed by animal control officers.
Beavers says investigators are looking into whether the 800 birds were pets or possibly connected to a nearby cockfighting ring that was busted last week.
Authorities also found 20 marijuana plants and an ounce of methamphetamine in the house.

Either these folks really loved to make the original of coq au vin (which is how you cook an old rooster the French way), they were serious Santaria worshippers which requires blood sacrifice of animals, or they were selling or using the birds in cock-fighting. Take your pick.
