As of March 2, 2026, the United States and Israel are engaged in a massive joint military campaign against Iran titled Operation Epic Fury. President Donald Trump has characterized the ongoing strikes as a “last best chance” to eliminate the Iranian regime’s capabilities, though officials offer conflicting reports on whether “regime change” is an explicit goal. The Iranian state remains partially intact despite significant decapitation strikes.

The White House reports that 49 senior leaders have been killed, including former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and high-ranking intelligence and defense officials. Surviving leadership, including President Masoud Pezeshkian, has formed a temporary council to govern during the transition. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has vowed to “dig in,” stating that the losses have only made them stronger.

U.S. and Israeli forces have struck over 1,000 targets in the first 24 hours alone, with the campaign entering its third day. President Trtump outlined four primary goals: destroying Iran’s missile capabilities, annihilating its navy, preventing nuclear weapon acquisition, and ending its funding of regional proxies. Trump expects operations to last four to five weeks, though he stated the U.S. is prepared to continue “far longer” if necessary. The Iranian Red Crescent reports at least 550 deaths in Iran. The U.S. military has confirmed four American service members killed in action following Iranian retaliatory strikes in the region.

Iran has launched hundreds of drones and missiles at Israel, the UAE, and U.S. bases in Qatar and Bahrain. Shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has reportedly shut down, causing extreme volatility in global energy markets. The U.S. Embassy has issued an emergency shelter-in-place order for any Americans remaining in Iran.
