Irish economy 'worst hit in eurozone'
Irish economy 'worst hit in eurozone'
France 24

See the video at the link
For 15 years, Ireland's economy boomed, but today it is the country most severely hit by recession in the Eurozone. Every five minutes, a job is lost. When the property bubble burst, Irish banks had to pay the price. In Limerick, computer giant Dell is shedding 1900 jobs, closing its plant and moving to Poland.
Ireland's deputy prime minister presents students with business awards, but with unemployment at 8%, students are worried about their future. The government is about to take some unpopular decisions - Irish tax payers will soon be handed a large bill. The French took to the streets for far less; how the Irish respond remains to be seen.

Since the Irish I have spoken to blame the EU for their financial mess, it will not be pretty. I have heard more about the EU mandating that the Irish sugar beat plants be closed down and dismantled now, than I did when this actually took place a few years ago. The Irish have always been community planners when it comes to dissension. It is one of the primary reasons taxes on drink have been raised through the roof and the smoking ban was implemented, there won't be much plotting in the pubs, but now they have another meeting place, which I will not reveal, it is going to be interesting.

02-06-2009, 05:37 PM #4Much cheaper wages AND special status with the EU as a weaker partner. Ireland is no longer allowed to give the corporate tax breaks they used to give. These breaks built the "Celtic Tiger". Now the EU has said "no no" to this and Ireland is losing jobs to Eastern Europe faster than illegals cross our southern border. I am telling you folks, the EU is pushing the Irish, and that is never a good idea.

02-06-2009, 05:45 PM #5Sure would like to join forces with the likes of them.....somebody still has to be around that's fed up with this. Not to mention, when you said don't mess with the Irish......I loved that Irish guy that joined with Scottland in the movie Braveheart. That movie always gets me feeling more hopeful. Now the EU has said "no no" to this and Ireland is losing jobs to Eastern Europe faster than illegals cross our southern border. 02-06-2009, 05:50 PM #6Haven't they also had a huge influx of Polish immigrants taking the jobs in Ireland? It's been awhile since I read articles from there.....but they were saying Ireland practically has no identity anymore.....road signs and such in a multitude of languages and none wanting to fit in at all. Lots of gang problems and the feeling that all would be well if the Irish just left.I am telling you folks, the EU is pushing the Irish, and that is never a good idea.
Kind of like I feel here.

02-06-2009, 06:14 PM #8You are partially right. Huge numbers of Polish, Lithuanians and South Africans. The Irish culture in the last, 5 or 6 years has practically died. I do not recognize it as even close to the country I first visited all of those years ago. Yes, more and more languages are being spoken there as well. I don't know much about gangs there, but I do not doubt it. A few years ago I was in Cork City with my mam-in-law and we got off an elevator in a carpark and what should I see? I saw graffiti, and it was written in Spanish!

02-06-2009, 06:43 PM #9OK.....I check in over there from time to time and found myself reading things and unfortunatly I don't always remember where I saw it. Could have been a start of something where some group wanted their language added to the signs......all I remember was people were mad and expressing alot of anger over all they've lost in the quest of being so welcoming to everyone that they have lost their identity. At the same time I was reading stories from England where the thoughts were very similar. Hit me so much that I had to laugh when I saw the new Long John Silver fish special about the English fish and chips, because someone said even that was something that was going with all the ethnic food. So much so you would no longer know what country you were in anymore. All the street signs and all government signs are written in two languages, English and Irish.Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

Crime in Ireland: 139 drug gangs, 623 public order hotspots
By Kevin Doyle
Thursday December 04 2008
The true state of the crime situation in Ireland was laid bare in a garda report published today. The document highlights the real number of gangs operating in the State.
Issued by Commissioner Fachtna Murphy, the report starkly acknowledges:
that 360 gang members in 11 gangs now have both criminal and paramilitary links.
some of those gangs are those involved in the vicious Crumlin/Drimnagh feud that has led to 15 murders in Dublin.
there are 139 significant drugs gangs operating here. The report is confirmation of longstanding fears that the crime gangs and IRA/INLA would in time morph.
almost 1,300 guns were stolen in the past three years and only 373 have been recovered.
there are 623 areas or "hotspots" -- mostly in Dublin and Limerick -- where there are serious risks of public order problems, such as riots or serious violence.
following yesterday's mass raids on brothels, the Commissioner identifies three human trafficking gangs bringing young women into the country against their will.
One of the most worrying parts of the report is the identification of 11 gangs, involving 360 people who make up paramilitary/narco supergangs.
One of those gangs is undoubtedly the INLA racketeering outfits based in Dublin's south inner city, which is involved in a turf war with the "Fat" Freddie Thompson gang.
This showdown has led to countless bomb and grenade incidents and several shootings.
Gardai surveillance, says the report, resulted in the profiling of 139 drug trafficking networks in the State.
It also shows that gun crime is spiralling out of control. Officers had hoped to reduce the number of incidents involving firearms last year, but they actually increased by 11pc.
Levels of theft from vehicles and shops are up by 9pc and 2pc respectively.
Terrorist
Officers did, however, exceed targets for seizures of illegal drugs, which are up 27pc instead of the projected 5pc.
The force carried out more than 6,500 operations against drug dealers and users in 2007.
And along with tracking gangland hoods, garda have also compiled dossiers on potential threats to national security by identifying and profiling 237 groups and individuals who they suspect have radical or terrorist links.
There were 38,888 intelligence exchanges with international law enforcement agencies last year, it said.
Two of the main areas where garda top brass believe the war is being won are public order and traffic.
As part of the effort to combat street violence and drunkenness, gardai took court proceedings against 86 individuals or companies for selling alcohol to underage drinkers last year.
Liquor
There were also 23 applications to close pubs or off licences for breaches of liquor laws. And around 179 publicans have been prosecuted for allowing drunkenness on their premises in the past five years.
Garda traffic units succeeded in achieving a 10pc increase in detection of a variety of offences last year, including drink and drug driving, dangerous driving, speeding and failing to wear a seatbelt.
The report also states that there were 225 offences of racist crime recorded last year. The force itself still only comprises of a tiny minority of members from ethnic communities.
Only 18 members of the 14,000 strong force are from ethnic backgrounds. Garda crackdowns on organised crime have been helped substantially by a 46pc rise in the number of intelligence sources. If Palestine puts down their guns, there will be peace.
If Israel puts down their guns there will be no more Israel.
