Irish police seize nine million cigarettes

Police in the Republic of Ireland have seized nine million cigarettes in an anti-smuggling operation.

A lorry and a 4x4 vehicle were stopped and searched at a motorway service station near Castlebellingham in County Louth at 08:15 BST.

Four men, aged 36, 38, 39 and 44, were arrested at the scene.

Police estimated the street value of the seized cigarettes to be 4.3m euros (£3.6m).

A number of business premises and homes have been searched in a follow-up operation.
