Jewel Osco
For those of you with Jewel Osco stores in your area you might be interested to know that yesterday I noticed they've put up a "Career Center" at the front of our store with a nice big sign in English AND Spanish. The application can be done on the computer in this career center and the applicant can choose a Spanish application. I happened to see a guy using it yesterday and he was filling out his application in Spanish.
The area we live in does not have a lot of Spanish speaking customers but apparently the store has decided that it's just fine to hire people with such a poor or nonexistant grasp of the English language that they need their applications to be in Spanish. I am furious. We all know how this will go. It happened in the last town I lived in. A few Spanish signs go up and before you know it the store is frequented by so many Spanish speakers that the products our family enjoys are no longer carried. They are replaced by products that the Spanish speaking people want to buy. Furthermore, how can someone who is not bilingual, but who speaks only Spanish help out a customer who speaks English?
If you have time, please send an email expressing your disapproval or Jewel's practice of Spanish signs in their career center. Thanks.

I think you are talking about the very store that I shop at.
I'll gladly pass on a comment and also speak to the manager next time I go. We are on a nodding basis.
I'm tired of this.
Do you go to the Little Caesars near there? After seeing people with another language other then English working there for several years now, and sometimes having difficulty getting my order across -they hired this English speaker in December. He addresses everyone in English. The others address you in the language they think you speak.
I hope you read the article about Waukegan on the front of the NYT's yesterday. If not here it is...

Last summer at the local Jewel store, we had upsetting event. Right in font of the store, and partly under the overhang of the building, there were two folding tables set up, with papers and other smaller items. Also there was a spinning wheel that looked just like the one on the game show “The price is Rightâ€

Well if any of you have time, would you please email Jewel at the link gave in my first post of the thread? Here is the email I sent to the Jewel followed by their reply to me. It's now been 48 hours and I've heard nothing from them. I guess my complaint isn't so important to them after all.
Here is my email to Jewel:
Thank you for your reply. I have been unable to get through to the Melrose Park office so I will send my message to you. If someone plans to phone my house please do so after 3PM.
Last summer I contacted Jewel in regard to a Jewel coupon I received in the mail. The coupon was for Lactaid and it featured Spanish print first and then English. I contacted Jewel to express my outrage about the fact that Spanish was featured before English. I was told that the coupon was sent in error because this particular area does not have a lot of Spanish speaking customers, so I decided to give the Jewel a second chance.
I am now writing in regard to the “Career Centerâ€"Calling an illegal alien an undocumented immigrant is like calling a burglar an uninvited house guest."
