A federal judge says she has two letters from a cardiologist saying ex-presidential candidate John Edwards has a life-threatening condition that will require surgery in February.

The letters were revealed during a hearing Friday to consider whether the ex-North Carolina Senator would go on trial later this month for alleged campaign finance violations.

Attorneys for Edwards were seeking a 60-day delay to allow time for Edwards to recover. The judge delayed the trial to March 26.

Edwards was in court at the judge's request, although doctors advised him to avoid travel and all court proceedings.

If he's in prison the taxpayers have to pick up the bill. If he has the treatments before he goes to prison he, of his insurance company, has to pay for it.

John Edwards has been charged with six felony and misdemeanor counts for using nearly $1 million from donors to keep his pregnant mistress a secret during the 2008 presidential election.

The trial was scheduled to start on January 30th, but his lawyers requested a delay of at least two months for an undisclosed medical condition.

Relatedly, if you were wondering what drove you to click on this story, Time magazine says that your brain makes you enjoy hating people like John Edwards.

"There is literal disgust and moral disgust, and the two overlap," says Jonathan Haidt, professor of psychology at the University of Virginia. "Betrayal, hypocrisy, certain kinds of baseness trigger the brain's moral response."

Time and Haidt pointed to 1975 study in which subjects were asked to impose sentences on imaginary defendants, based only on a description of the imaginary crime and a photo of a person who was said to be the perpetrator. Mostly, attractive people got lighter sentences. Except in some circumstances:

"When the people in the scenarios used their attractiveness in their crimes, it switched the valence," says Haidt. "They actually got a heavier sentence."

UPDATE: 3:13PM: The extension was granted. Judge Catherine Eagles confirms she received a serious letter from John Edwards' cardiologist. She expects another medical update by the end of February.

John Edwards Has ‘Serious’ Heart Condition, Trial Delayed

The criminal trial of John Edwards that was set to begin Jan. 30 will be delayed at least two months because the former Democratic presidential candidate has a “real and serious” heart condition that requires medical intervention.

Federal Judge Catherine Eagles granted the delay after noting that she had received two letters from Edwards’ cardiologist detailing the nature of the heart trouble.

While the precise condition was not discussed in open court, it was revealed that Edwards has had three “episodes” in recent weeks and that he is scheduled to undergo a procedure next month. Edwards has also been advised to avoid driving.

Edwards appeared “a little pale and gaunt” during a brief interaction inside the courthouse, where cameras are not permitted, according to Ed Crump, a reporter for ABC’s Raleigh affiliate WTVD who attended the court hearing today.

Edwards apparently managed to evade photographers on the way in and out of court this afternoon. At previous court appearances, Edwards has used the front entrance and has made no obvious effort to avoid being photographed.

A two-time presidential candidate and the 2004 Democratic vice presidential nominee, Edwards was charged in June in a six-count federal indictment alleging that he was complicit in an illegal scheme to funnel hundreds of thousands of dollars from two wealthy supporters to help support and seclude his pregnant mistress, Rielle Hunter, during the 2008 presidential campaign. Prosecutors allege those payments were intended to influence the election and therefore violated federal campaign laws.

Edwards pleaded not guilty to all the charges and his lawyers have described the government’s case as “crazy,” and that prosecutors are employing a radical interpretation of election law.

In requesting the delay, the defense team argued that Edwards has been unable to participate in trial preparations in the past month, resulting in their falling behind in their case work.



The judge has asked all parties to report back to her at the end of February for an update. The trial is now set to begin March 26, but might be subject to further delay.

Oh heck we all knew he had a serious heart condition the day he screwed over his dying wife Elizabeth so what's new here? Wonder what that will cost him!!!! And to think at one time I liked him....barf bag on this end. Enough time wasted on this jerk
