World hopes for a 'less arrogant America'

BERLIN – The world was riveted by the election drama unfolding Tuesday in the United States, inspired by the hope embodied by Barack Obama or simply relieved that – whoever wins – the administration that spawned Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay was coming to an end.
From Berlin's Brandenburg Gate to the small town of Obama, Japan, the globe geared up to celebrate a fresh start for America after eight wearisome years of George W. Bush.

Germany, where more than 200,000 flocked to see Obama this summer as he moved to burnish his foreign policy credentials during a trip to the Middle East and Europe, the election dominated television ticker crawls, newspaper headlines and Web sites.

I've seen film footage of Abu Ghraib under Saddam, people with their arms chained to a wall while two guys beat them with metal pipes, another guy with his arm held between two bricks while his forearm is shattered with a pipe, others having their fingers or hand being chopped off, others tied up on the ground and having their heads cut off and placed on their back.
Then along comes us mean ol Americans and embarrass a few prisoners and those who did it were punished but forget that part, we are simply mean people who don't care about others.
Kinda makes you wonder why people from all over the world are running from their own countries and coming here doesn't it?

Mountain, personally we shouldn't give a @#$% about what the "rest of the world" thinks. It would be totally ridiculous to believe that they care about anything other than their own sorry arses!

Exactly! All thier viewpoints are on how our leader is going to affect THEM. They don't care about us! All they want to do is take a piece of our pie for themselves.

I hope for a less arrogant world, who is not always telling us what kind of handouts they want!!

Oh, I don't care what they think. My point is all these countries say how horrible we are but it's OK for others to chop off peoples heads simply because they disagree with the local polotics.
Like I asked above, why is everybody wanting to run here if the rest of the world is so great?

They are our friends when they want something from Americans but when we are not willing to give everything we have, we are selfish, such as hand over our country to Mexico and Central Americans and keep an open door policy to the rest of the world.

If any of those countrys ever really stick up for Americans and stand by us in saving our country....I would be shocked.

They don't seem to mind our 'arrogance' when they want aid or military assistance, citizenship for their downtrodden, oppressed, etc! I never hear them complaining then! I didn't hear China complaining when they enter into ultra-favorable trade agreements with the United States!

I could go on, but it's pointless, as those who make such claims are never going to like us, irrespective of what we do, who we elect, or what we give to them!

They will need to keep hoping for a long time. Arrogance defined is headed for the White House.
