- Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, who won gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics, was revealed to be biologically male through leaked chromosome tests from the 2023 World Boxing Championships, where he was disqualified for failing gender eligibility requirements.
- Tests at an accredited lab in New Delhi showed Khelif had male karyotypes, 5-alpha reductase deficiency, internal testes, a micropenis and high testosterone levels (14.7), far exceeding the female range (?3).
- Despite the evidence, the International Olympic Committee allowed Khelif to compete, prioritizing gender identity over biology and sparking backlash over fairness and safety in women's sports.
- While the IBA disqualified Khelif in 2023, World Boxing mandated PCR testing before allowing him to compete in women's events, aligning with the IBA's original stance.
- Critics, including Piers Morgan and J.K. Rowling, condemned Khelif's participation, calling it unfair and dangerous, highlighting the broader debate over science versus ideology in sports.
Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, who won gold in women's boxing at the 2024 Paris Olympics, is biologically male as revealed by leaked chromosome test results.
The leaked medical report arose from a test conducted during the 2023 World Boxing Championships, where the International Boxing Association (IBA) disqualified Khelif for failing gender eligibility requirements. The test on him was conducted at Dr. Lal PathLabs in the Indian capital New Delhi, a facility accredited by the College of American Pathologists and certified by the International Organization for Standardization.
According to the March 17, 2023 report, Khelif's DNA contained "markers with male karyotypes." A subsequent examination in June of that year seconded the findings of this earlier document. The second report found that he had 5-alpha reductase type-2 deficiency – a condition in which individuals, though often assigned female at birth, are genetically male.
The June 2023 report noted that he possessed internal testes, a micropenis and testosterone levels of 14.7 – far exceeding the female range of three or below. The U.S. National Library of Medicine states that such individuals develop masculine traits during puberty, granting them a physical advantage in sports.
Biology vs. identity: The controversial case shaking women's boxing
Despite the findings of both reports, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) allowed Khelif to compete in Paris, citing identity over biology. The body's decision sparked outrage among athletes and advocates, and raised serious questions about fairness and safety in women's sports.
IOC President Thomas Bach dismissed the IBA's 2023 disqualification as "arbitrary." He also dismissed the tests, which 3 Wire Sports brought to light, as "not legitimate" despite the New Delhi laboratory's accreditations.
Given the recent development, World Boxing (WB) – amateur boxing's governing body – mandated Khelif undergo PCR testing to confirm biological sex before competing in women's events. In a May 30 letter to the Algerian Boxing Federation, WB stated he "may not participate in the female category" until testing is completed. The decision by WB, which is set to oversee the sport at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, echoes the IBA's 2023 stance. Following news of the leaked test results, personalities critical of Khelif's participation in women's boxing took to X to air out their sentiments. "The biology-denying woke brigade abused and shamed me for saying it was outrageous and dangerous for Khelif to be beating up women at the Olympics," journalist Piers Morgan wrote.
Author J.K. Rowling of the "Harry Potter" series, also a staunch critic of transgenderism, called Khelif's exclusion "a win for women because they won't be battered to death in the ring by men." She remarked: "I knew he was a man."
The saga involving Khelif underscores a broader clash between ideology and science in sports. While he has publicly insisted that he is "a woman, like any other woman," medical records tell a different story.
