At least 31 killed in terror attacks at Brussels airport, Metro station

As many as 31 people were killed and more than 180 injured as coordinated terrorist bombings rocked the Brussels airport and subway system during rush hour Tuesday morning in the Belgian capital.

Two bombings at Zaventem Airport, where 11 people were reportedly killed, and another at the metro station in the Maelbeek section near the European Union headquarters, where the mayor's office said 20 were killed, were almost immediately confirmed as terrorism. The attack at the airport was reportedly accompanied by shouts in Arabic and gunfire, and an unexploded suicide belt was reportedly found in the aftermath.

"What we feared has happened, we were hit by blind attacks," said Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel.

"We are at war,” French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said Tuesday. “We have been subjected for the last few months in Europe to acts of war."

"What we feared has happened, we were hit by blind attacks."

The attacks, which Belgian authorities said were suicide bombings, came four days after the main suspect in the November Paris attacks was arrested in Brussels, and even as Brussels was braced for new attacks.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility. A source told Fox News that a credible ISIS social media account posted the message, “Mosul revenge for the Kuffar capital Brussels,” but it was not definitive that the terror group was behind the attacks.

The first two explosions rocked the departure hall at the Brussels airport shortly after 8 a.m. local time.

Early reports placed the number of dead at 13, with as many as 81 wounded, although the death toll was later revised downward to 11. Witnesses told The Associated Press that one occurred at an American Airlines counter and the other near a Starbucks cafe.

American Airlines said in a statement that none of its employees were among the dead or injured and later tweeted from its verified account that the blast did not occur at its check-in row.

“There were two explosions in the departure area, one probably caused by a suicide bomber," said Belgian federal prosecutor Frederic Van Leeuw of the attack on the airport.

One of the airport bombs may have been in a suitcase,
a U.S. official told The Associated Press, and local TV reported that it may have been loaded with nails.

Witnesses recounted a harrowing and chaotic scene.

“First there was one explosion. Everyone started to run and panic broke out. Then a second explosion was heard,” one witness told The Brussels Times about the airport explosion.

Zach Mouzoun, who arrived on a flight from Geneva about 10 minutes before the first blast, told BFM television that the second, louder explosion brought down ceilings and ruptured pipes, mixing water with blood from victims.

"It was atrocious. The ceilings collapsed," he said. "There was blood everywhere, injured people, bags everywhere."

"We were walking in the debris. It was a war scene," he said.

Marie-Odile Lognard, a traveler who was lining up in the departures hall for a flight to Abu Dhabi, told BFM television that people panicked after the first explosion about 65 feet from her and that a second explosion about 15 seconds later caused parts of the ceiling to collapse.

"I knew it was an explosion because I've been around explosions before," said Denise Brandt, an American woman interviewed by Sky television.

"I felt the explosion, the way it feels through your body. And we just looked at each other and I said 'let's go this way.' It was over there. There was just this instinct to get away from it. Then we saw people running, crying, toward us. So I knew we were going in the right direction and away from it. "

Amateur video shown on France's i-Tele television showed passengers -- including a child -- running with a backpack dashing out of the terminal in different directions as they tugged luggage. Belgian news channel RTBF reports a Kalashnikov rifle was found in the departure hall at the airport.

A Belgium native, Noel says he was in an airport shop buying automobile magazines when the first explosion occurred about 50 yards away.

"People were crying, shouting, children. It was a horrible experience," he told AP. He said his decision to buy the magazines might have saved his life. "I don't want to think about it, but I would probably have been in that place when the bomb went off."

Three Mormon missionaires, identified by the church as Richard Norby, 66; Joseph Empey, 20, and Mason Wells, 19, all of Utah, were the only Americans known to have been injured in the airport attack.

Moments later at the Metro station, another explosion was reported on a train that was stopped at the Maelbeek subway station, not far from the headquarters of the European Union. Ian McCafferty told The Irish Times he was just getting off the metro at the stop before Maelbeek around 8:20 a.m. when he heard a “loud muffled thud” but, because of construction at the metro, he “didn’t really think much of it.

“There was a large military presence and mass confusion,” he said. “People started to run. Some people were crying. The two stations are only a stone’s throw apart. We were the last train through the station before the blast.”

Rescue workers set up a makeshift treatment center in a local pub near the train station. Dazed and shocked morning travelers streamed from the metro entrances as police tried to set up a security cordon.

Brussels Mayor Yvan Majeur put the number of dead at the train station at 20, with more than 100 more injured.

Alexandre Brans, 32, who was wiping blood from his face, said: "The metro was leaving Maelbeek station when there was a really loud explosion. It was panic everywhere. There were a lot of people in the metro."

First responders ran through the street outside with two people on stretchers, their clothes badly torn.

The bombings in the European Union capital are certain to add new fire to the raging debate over refugees from Muslim nations where terrorist groups are active. Europe has taken in more than a million refugees, and terror groups including ISIS have said they are infiltrating the wave of migrants.

After his arrest on Friday, Salah Abdeslam, who is suspected of taking part in the Nov. 13 Paris attack that killed 130 people, told authorities he had created a new network and was planning new attacks.

After Abdeslam's arrest and before Tuesday's attacks, authorities were frantically hunting a suspect identified as 24-year-old Najim Laachraoui, who allegedly traveled to Hungary with Abdeslam before the Paris attack on Nov. 13. It was unclear whether Laachraoui played any role in Tuesday's bombings, but prosecutors say Laachraoui played a key role in recruiting attackers for ISIS.

U.S. authorities were monitoring the situation, poised to assist in the investigation. A U.S. counter-terrorism source told Fox News the priority for investigators is identifying the suicide bomber or bombers through DNA because they cannot operate in isolation, and identifying them can lead to the broader network.

Speaking Havana, President Obama mentioned the attacks before giving prepared comments on the thawing relationship between the U.S. and Cuba.

Obama called the attacks “outrageous,” and pledged that the thoughts and prayers of Americans are with the Belgian people.

“This is yet another reminder that the world must unite, we must be together, regardless of nationality or race or faith, in fighting the scourge of terrorism,” said Obama, who had also spoken to Michel by phone.

Belgium's interior minister announced that the terror threat was being raised to its maximum level. All flights were canceled and arriving planes and trains were diverted.

Authorities told people in Brussels to stay where they were, bringing the city to a standstill. Airport security was also tightened in Paris, London and other European cities. Flights due to land at Zaventem, which handles 21 million passengers a year, were sent to Antwerp, Liege, and Brussels Charleroi airports.

French President Francois Hollande said "terrorists struck Brussels but it was Europe that was targeted -- and all the world that is concerned," adding that "this war will be long."

Paris announced it would light the Eiffel Tower in the colors of the Belgian flag, and security around France's nuclear plants was reportedly increased, though no specific threat was cited.

ISIS-linked website says terror group claimed credit for deadly attack

At least 34 people have been confirmed dead in multiple explosions in Brussels, with at least three Americans "seriously injured"

Blasts were reported at the international airport and a subway station near a European Union office

The terror group ISIS said today that its "fighters" were responsible for the terrorist attack in Belgium that claimed more than 30 lives and injured at least three Americans, according to an ISIS-affiliated website.

The claim cannot be independently verified and there's no official word from Belgian authorities.

There were two explosions in the departure hall of Brussels Airport in Zaventem, Belgium early this morning, according to Prime Minister Charles Michel, where officials said at least 14 people were killed. Three Americans, Mormon missionaries, were "seriously injured" in the blasts, according to Eric Hawkins, a spokesman for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

There was also an explosion on the rail tracks at the Maelbeek subway station, according to a spokeswoman for Brussels transportation department.

At least 20 people were killed there, officials said.

Between the two sites, local officials estimate that more than 180 people were injured.

Prime Minister Michel said the nation's worst fears were realized.
Is he surprised?? When you allow the breeding and importing of radical muslims, allow their ghetto no-go zones, this is what you get. They make fools of your nation & kill your citizens!

Then people say "they are not dangerous but are in danger" - that is some major head in the sand concept.

Interestingly Belgium had released an ad campaign earlier this year to encourage tourism after the country made international headlines for being a terrorist hub. Someone reedited the video to include footage from the bombings.

French TV Station’s Cameras Happen to Capture What Occurs Moments After Woman in Hijab Approaches Memorial for Brussels Victims

    Mar. 25, 2016 10:12am Chris Enloe

In the aftermath of the terrorist attack in Brussels, make-shift memorials and vigils have been erected as a way for people to honor and remember those who were injured or lost their lives in the attack. But at one of these sites, a French news station appeared to capture a disgraceful display amid the outpouring of support from across the globe.

Video of the incident, which was captured by the RTL television network, shows a woman wearing a traditional Muslim hijab walking through a vigil for Tuesday’s victims. She is then seen sifting through multiple national flags and at one point picking up the Palestinian national flag.

She next walks over to what appears to be an Israeli national flag, picks it up and begins to rip it into pieces. After she tears the flag into scraps, cameras seemingly show her burying the pieces under other flags.

The incident reportedly occurred at the central Brussels location of Place de la Bourse.

The bodies of Americans Stephanie and Justin Shults were identified today, five days after the blasts at Brussels airport.

Mr Shults' brother, Levi Sutton, paid tribute to his sibling, who is originally from Tennessee on Twitter saying: 'We found out today that cowards took my brother's life just weeks after his 30th birthday.

'I was blessed to have Justin as a big brother. He was smart and kind and generous. I never met a single person that didn't like him.

'He worked hard his whole life and achieved goats that most could only dream about.

Levi Sutton is pictured second left with his brother Justin Shults and wife Stephanie on their wedding day two years ago

'He traveled the world leaving each destination better than when he arrived.

'Knowing that I'll never be able to see him again hurts but it's worse that my future children will never get to know their uncle Justin as he would've been a great role model. Please pray for my mom.'

The grim news was revealed by company executives at Clarcor, the engineering firm the 30-year-old worked for.

And later today, Mars, where Stephanie, 29, who is originally from Kentucky, worked also delivered the sad news that her body had also been identified as one of the victims.

The company posted to its Facebook page: 'Today we learned from Stephanie's family that she and her husband, Justin, were among those killed in the attack on Brussels airport.

'We are mourning the loss of our colleague and friend. Our hearts and thoughts are with their families, and with all those who are suffering during this terrible time.'

The pair had driven Mrs Shults's mother to the airport on Tuesday morning when terrorists detonated two bombs inside Brussels-Zaventem Airport terminal.

Mrs Moore survived, but there had been no sign of the missing of the couple until today when their car was found outside the airport.

The couple married two years ago and moved to Belgium to work.

Mrs Shults, who speaks fluent French, worked as an accountant for the confectionery giant and her husband's company created a post for him in Belgium so he could be with his wife, friends said.

The Shults family have previously expressed their disgust with officials involved with the Brussels recovery operation after they were told the couple had been found injured, only for it to later emerge that they were still missing.

Their family's hopes were raised on Wednesday when they received a call from a social worker, saying the couple had been found at a Brussels hospital.

But their happiness quickly turned to confusion and anger when they learned just two hours later that the social worker had been wrong.

'We called Senator Corker’s office and we gave them the information that a social worker from Belgium had called me and asked me where I got my information from,' Justin's mother Sheila Shell told WATE.

'I had told her I got a call from the State Department and she said, "well that information is incorrect. They have not been found and they are not in any hospital that we have here".'

'I am disgusted that the information given to us wasn't 100 percent correct,' Justin's brother Levi Sutton wrote in a furious tweet on Wednesday.

Two siblings from New York were yesterday confirmed dead following the airport blast, which was followed by a bombing at a metro station on a day of terror that claimed 34 lives and injured 200 people.

The family of Dutch sister and brother Sascha and Alexander Pinczowski were told the pair have been found dead.

The siblings were on the phone to their mother in Holland when the first explosions were heard and the line went dead.

James Cain, the former U.S. Ambassador to Denmark whose daughter Cameron was engaged to Alexander Pinczowski, released a statement on behalf of the family on Friday.

'We received confirmation this morning from Belgian Authorities and the Dutch Embassy of the positive identification of the remains of Alexander and Sascha.

'We are grateful to have closure on this tragic situation, and are thankful for the thoughts and prayers from all. The family is in the process of making arrangements,' the statement read.

Cain, who now lives in Raleigh, Virginia, remembered Alexander as a 'brilliant young man' who was clever and 'intimidatingly smart'.

    Question

Brussels: “March Against Fear” canceled for fear of jihad attack

    MARCH 26, 2016 6:11 PM BYROBERT SPENCER

Fear wins out in Brussels. Belgians can thank their leaders, who have brought this problem upon themselves with their disastrous policies regarding Muslim immigration.

Following officials’ warnings, the rally’s organizers have postponed a march against the terror attacks. European nations have boosted security after the bombings, with Germany and Belgium arresting several suspects.

Belgian Interior Minister Jan Jambon on Saturday urged people to refrain from participating in Sunday’s planned “March against Fear” rally.

Brussels Mayor Yvan Mayeur said at a joint press conference with Jambon that authorities were stretched by ongoing investigations following Tuesday’s attacks across Brussels that left more than 30 dead and hundreds injured.

A man arrested in connection with the deadly Brussels attacks is facing terrorism charges, prosecutors say. Eleven suspects have been arrested in Belgium and Germany since the attacks.

“Let us allow the security services to do their work and that the march – which we, too, want to take part in – be delayed for several weeks,” the mayor told reporters.

Following the press briefing, the rally’s organizers announced the event’s cancellation in a statement.

“The security of our citizens is an absolute priority,” the organizers said.

“Consequently, we completely join the authorities in their proposal to postpone to a later date. We thus ask citizens not to come this Sunday to Brussels,” the statement added….

PARIS JIHADIS WENT DANCING, THEN WENT KILLING

That shows they weren’t really Muslims at all, right? Wrong.

    March 29, 2016
    Robert Spencer

Footage has emerged of Paris jihad murderers Salah Abdeslam and his brother Brahim dancing at a Brussels nightclub several months before they murdered 130 people. The UK’s Daily Mail, always determined to ignore the jihadi mindset and motivations and misrepresent both as quite other than what they are, took this as another indication that jihadis in general are not what they claim to be: “Video shows the extremists eight months before the massacre in Paris, seemingly enjoying the Westernised lifestyle ISIS claims to despise.” As always, however, reality is different from the mainstream media’s presentation of it.

We have seen this several times before, going all the way back to 9/11, when it came to light that Mohammed Atta and several of the other jihadi hijackers had been at a strip club not long before the attacks. This indicated, we were told, and have been told many times since, that contrary to their own claims, jihad terrorists are not pious Muslims acting upon the exhortations in the Qur’an and Sunnah to make war against unbelievers. On the contrary, goes this claim, these terrorists have nothing whatsoever to do with Islam, and are simply reacting to the alleged evils of the West. Because after all, what pious, believing Muslim engaged in an act of jihad would risk sullying his soul in a strip club and thereby detracting from the spiritual value of his jihad?

This question, however, betrays in itself a lack of understanding of Islamic theology – a lack of understanding that continues, all these years after 9/11, to hamstring our response to the jihad threat. What is understood by precious few counter-terror analysts is that a pious, believing Muslim who is about to engage in a momentous act of jihad may very well engage in activity that Islamic law would deem sinful, and do so freely and knowingly.

The reasons for this are set out in the Qur’an and Hadith. The Qur’an teaches that if one’s good deeds outweigh one’s bad deeds on the “scales of justice for the Day of Resurrection,” one will enter Paradise:

“And We place the scales of justice for the Day of Resurrection, so no soul will be treated unjustly at all. And if there is the weight of a mustard seed, We will bring it forth. And sufficient are We as accountant.” (Qur’an 21:47)

When one’s deeds are weighed in these scales, the weightiest deed of all is waging jihad for the sake of Allah. Muhammad himself explains that the best of all deeds is jihad, and thus it outweighs all others:

“The Prophet said, ‘A single endeavor of fighting in Allah’s Cause is better than the world and whatever is in it.'” (Bukhari 4:52:50)

“A man came to Allah’s Apostle and said, ‘Instruct me as to such a deed as equals Jihad in reward.’ He replied, ‘I do not find such a deed.'” (Bukhari 4:52:44)

In light of all this, Salah and Brahim Abdeslam may well have known that they were going to commit jihad mass murder when they went dancing in Brussels several months before their killing spree. If they had been planning at that point to go killing for Allah in jihad, they could enjoy a night out and even a beer or two, knowing that the sinfulness of it all would be far outweighed by their jihad.

Friends of the brothers recount, however, that their turn to Islam came after the night out captured on video: “I saw Salah joke, smoke, drink and play cards. If anything, he liked women. He was something of a ladies man and I heard he had a girlfriend at one point.” However, “that was the last time I saw them drink. Brahim started to become more religious. He would attend Friday prayers at the mosque but otherwise pray at home.”

Whether the jihad brothers actually became more religious after this night out or were already in the process of doing so, once again we see another frequently recurring phenomenon that is often denied: Muslims becoming devout in their observance of Islam and then becoming jihad murderers. And when they killed all those infidels in Paris, the Abdeslam brothers could be sure that whatever sins they had committed that night in Brussels, and any other nights that hadn’t been captured on video, they were far outweighed on Allah’s scales of judgment by the blood of 130 non-Muslims killed for his cause. Their place in Paradise was secured.

FBI warned Dutch about dangers of Brussels bombers almost a week before attacks

    Published time: 29 Mar, 2016 17:22

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) gave Dutch police information about two of the Brussels bombers, brothers Ibrahim and Khalid El Bakraoui, almost a week before a series of deadly attacks rocked the Belgian capital.

The Dutch security services received information on March 16 about the criminal and radicalized background of the El Bakraoui brothers. The authorities in the Netherlands passed the material on to their Belgian colleagues the following day, local media reported.

The FBI had stated it had been tracking Ibrahim since September, while it also presented the Dutch with information regarding Ibrahim’s criminal activities and Khalid’s radical and terrorist background.

The revelations are likely to cause further embarrassment for European security services after Turkish authorities said following the blasts that Ibrahim El Bakraoui had been detained and expelled to Europe last July, with Ankara warning Belgium that he was a suspected terrorist who had tried to join Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) in Syria.

The El Bakraoui brothers, both Brussels residents, were the suicide bombers responsible for explosions that rocked the airport and a central subway station in the Belgian capital on Tuesday, killing at least 35 people.

Ibrahim reportedly blew himself up at Zaventem Airport, while Khalid set off the blast at Maelbeek Metro station.

Ibrahim was deported from Turkey to Amsterdam on July 14, 2015, but was not arrested on arrival, as the police in the Netherlands hadn’t been instructed to do so by Belgian law enforcement.
(another story posted states - Belgium would not take him back but the Netherlands did - another enabling of terror - you must be bad if Turkey deports you!)

According to Minister of the Interior Jan Jambon, the Belgian police liaison officer at the embassy in Turkey that received the information on Bakraoui’s terrorist links only forwarded it on to Belgium six days later, on July 20.

The embassy official then asked Turkey for further information on the suspect, reporting back with a reply half a year later, on January 11.

The Belgian authorities viewed Bakraoui as a criminal, but not a terrorist, the minister said. Bakraoui had skipped parole after serving less than half of a 10-year sentence for armed robbery.

It also emerged that the Bakraoui brothers’ initial targets were nuclear power stations in Belgium, according to the Dernier Heure newspaper.

The brothers planted a hidden camera in front of the home of the director of the Belgian nuclear research program, the paper said.

The footage with “dozens of hours” of the movements of Belgium's nuclear boss was seized during an anti-terrorist raid in the apartment of another suspect belonging to the same terror cell, Mohammed Bakkali.

According to investigators' information, obtained by Dernier Heure, the El Bakraoui brothers were the ones suspected of planting the cameras and were following the movements of the nuclear boss.

After analyzing the video, investigators concluded that the target of the terrorists was to “jeopardize national security like never before,” the newspaper wrote.
