Here is a deeply disturbing truth of our age—one American group, our most aggressive political ideology, is dangerously reactionary, exhibiting all the hallmarks of a fundamentalist movement. Is this the Conservatives? No. This group is, of course—modern liberalism. In fact, during a recent debate witnessed by this author, one party claimed that any person holding a literal belief in the Bible should be kept from public office by law. Why? The Church of England's 18th Century Methodist movement advocated reforms that would now be considered in the progressive tradition. The union movement---and even its modern entities like SEIU----is one legacy of the Methodists. By the 20th Century the fundamentalists didn't think the progressives were doing enough for personal morality---conversely, the liberal branch of Christianity thought the fundamentalists were backwards in moving ahead with the general reform of society's institutions.

So we have inherited a major rift in defining what Christianity is and most "progressives" are simply following full speed ahead with the reforms of the Methodists and those whom they influenced. However, they do seem to be blind to innovations---like volunteer missions---that fundamentalists have inaugurated recently.
