Letter from Senator Cornyn Re: Illegal Immigrant Disruptions at Texas Town Halls on Health Care Reform

Dear *****************:

Thank you for taking the time to contact me regarding disruptive activities taking place at recent "townhall" meetings on health care reform. I appreciate having the benefit of your views on this matter.

As a strong supporter of personal freedoms and free speech rights, I am troubled by the harassment and bullying that has occurred during "townhall" meetings.

I believe that threatening American citizens who are exercising their First Amendment rights to peacefully assemble, inquire about, and protest the policies of their government is unacceptable.

Health care affects every American and I believe it is imperative for us to take the time to listen to the patients, providers, families, and small businesses that will be significantly impacted by reform.

As Congress debates health care reform and other critical policy matters, citizen engagement free of fear is essential.

I appreciate the opportunity to represent Texans in the United States Senate, and you may be certain that I will continue working with my colleagues to protect our First Amendment rights as the health care debate continues.

Thank you for taking the time to contact me.

Sincerely,

JOHN CORNYN
United States Senator
