Drug use in Humboldt County has many layers. Meth has been a scourge in rural California for many years, and because it is often shot intravenously, the transition to heroin has been too easy for many.
It is that "transition"! Even with legalized marijuana, the users want the "extra kick". So you end up with "designer drugs" becoming popular over the plain old stuff. It is the mentality that makes a person dependent on any vice. Since it is about escapism, there is that draw to move to a higher high. It doesn't start with needles. Even the heavy opiates are not prescriptions by doctors. Those are usually pills. But the need increases.

Panhandling. Street begging just like they do in India. It used to be illegal in the US, you could be locked up for loitering, sleeping on the streets and begging for money on the streets. DemoQuacks changed all that, now it's legal, so they can get the money to pay for the drugs the illegal aliens run in for the foreign drug cartels.

A study of young, urban injection drug users interviewed in 2008 and 2009 found that 86 percent had used opioid pain relievers nonmedically prior to using heroin, and their initiation into nonmedical use was characterized by three main sources of opioids: family, friends, or personal prescriptions . . .

Addiction Among The Homeless Population | Sunrise House

Among homeless teens and young adults, prescription drug abuse has become increasingly common. Prescription opioids like oxycodone, hydrocodone, and hydromorphone, which are used for pain control in clinical settings, can exert the same euphoric effects as heroin, especially when the pills are crushed and snorted ...

Marijuana has been illegal in California since 1913 until it was legalized last year. Legal weed didn't cause your problem. Fortunately enough Californians realize that and have changed their laws. The President understands that and supports the states who have changed their laws and he's even agreed to support a bill in Congress that will end the federal War on Weed.

The way I see it, the only group of people who will be negatively impacted by the end of the War on Weed are police officers, who today spend a lot of their time and a lot of our money chasing and arresting pot smokers in black neighborhoods. They'll need to find another justification for their ranks, so I strongly recommend engaging in the War on Illegal Immigration.

"Legal weed" couldn't have because it wasn't available until last year!

The way you see it doesn't square with the reality of what happens. Eureka happened when the weed was illegal. The problem grew because people could do their drugs across the street from the jail, with no fear of enforcement. And so it grows. The stigma is what kept the problem from growing since pot became illegal in 1913. The whole state could be as Eureka if it had not been contained. But the barn door is open, or is it Pandora's Box. They may be no coming back.

Exactly. So legal weed DID NOT cause your problem. Not one thing in the article is about weed, it's about homelessness, needles, and addiction, none of which applies to ... weed, pot, cannabis or marijuana. It's about homeless people with heroin and meth addictions, a pit bull chained up, and dirty homeless guy who smelled like urine and alcohol who just wanted to talk to someone.

Judy, have you ever smoked marijuana? Done drugs, coke, PCP, smoked hash? Any of it? Most people who smoke marijuana are also introduced to coke, meth, crack and other drugs.

People just don't "try" heroin for the 1st time without previously smoking pot. Most likely...they were smoking pot.

This pot going around is not the same pot as it was over 30 years ago. A lot of genetically modified stuff out there and laced with bad stuff.

Who are we "legalizing" pot for? CPA's, Doctor's, Lawyers, CEO's, VP's, Judges, Nurses, Truck Drivers, Government Workers, Military, Equipment Operators, Electricians, auto workers???

Do we really want to legalize pot for the welfare and food stamp people? People who do not want to work, are unreliable and living on the dole? Legalize pot and now more kids will have easier access to it?

I do not want to go into a restaurant and have some pot head preparing my meal. It is a danger in the kitchen too. I do not want pot heads driving Semi trucks down the road or doing other jobs they should not be doing stoned.

To think that these people are not going to get stoned before work, during lunch and after work is absurd. Of course they will.

Legalize it and it removes the "fear" of getting busted. They will outright smoke pot whenever and wherever they want.

Think of the impact this will have on employers and the safety of employees in the workplace.

This is opening up a big can of worms of unintended consequences.

No, dear Beezer, I haven't, so from that standpoint I don't know anything about it. I have friends who smoke pot and a small number who use cocaine once in awhile.
