Air Marshals Stop Alleged 'Shoe Bomb' Attempt On United Jet to Denver
Qatari Diplomat In Custody After Attempting to 'Light Up' His Shoes
By RHONDA SCHWARTZ, RICHARD ESPOSITO and BRIAN ROSS
Apr. 7, 2010 —
Federal air marshals subdued a man who authorities say attempted to "light his shoes on fire" on a United flight from Washington Reagan to Denver Wednesday night, federal law enforcement officials told ABC News.
Authorities say an explosive team is on the way to the airport, and that while the presence of explosives has not yet been confirmed, they believe it was an attempted "shoe bomb."
The suspect was identified by authorities as a diplomat in the Qatar embassy in Washington, Mohammed al Modadi. The FBI said the man had full diplomat immunity as the 3rd secretary and vice-consul.
Authorities said two jet fighters were scrambled from Buckley Air Force Base to accompany United flight 663, a Boeing 757, as it flew the final 40 miles to Denver where it landed safely.
Authorities said the man, identified as from Qatar, was restrained by the air marshals who were on the flight.
The United jet was reportedly being directed to a remote location at the Denver airport.
A spokesman for the FBI in Denver declined to comment.

Good thing that Obama just recently ordered that US air authorities cannot apply extra scrutiny to people coming into the US from the Middle East right?

Sources: No Explosives Found on Denver Flight
FOXNews.com
A diplomat from Qatar is arrested on a United Airlines flight after he apparently attempted to smoke in the plane's bathroom. Initial reports suggested the man was trying to detonate a "shoe bomb."
A diplomat from Qatar was arrested Wednesday evening after it was believed he tried to light his shoes on fire on a United Airlines flight from Washington, D.C., to Denver, but instead may have simply been attempting to smoke in the plane's bathroom.
A source confirmed to Fox News that the suspect is Mohammed al Modadi, a diplomat in the Qatar embassy in Washington.
ABC News, which first reported the story, initially described the incident as an attempted "shoe bomb" attack, citing unnamed authorities, but officials now say the incident did not appear to involve an explosive substance or device.
One official said the man "made a joke about it" -- which only alarmed people further.
According to a senior law enforcement official, authorities do not believe Modadi was trying to harm anyone.
The U.S. Northern Command said two F-16 jets were scrambled from Buckley Air Force Base in Colorado to intercept the plane as it headed toward Denver's airport Wednesday night.
The Associated Press cited unnamed sources saying the FBI is investigating the incident. The Transportation Safety Administration confirmed it was "monitoring" the incident, saying initial reports described a passenger "possibly causing a disturbance."
"The flight landed safely at Denver International Airport. Law enforcement and TSA have responded to the scene and the passenger is currently in custody. All steps are being taken to ensure the safety of the traveling public," Transportation Security Administration spokesman Greg Soule said.
The flight was a Boeing 757, with 157 passengers and 6 crew members on board, United Airlines told Fox News.
