Maryland official, wife hid money as FBI neared, affidavit says

Prince Georges County, Maryland, Chief Executive Jack Johnson and his wife were taken into custody on Friday.

Washington (CNN) -- As the FBI closed in on Prince Georges County Executive Jack Johnson and his wife Friday morning, the panicked couple raced to find a $100,000 check for an alleged kickback and flush it down the toilet. Mrs. Johnson stuffed nearly $80,000 in her bra to try to hide it from FBI agents knocking on her door.

The dramatic end to an alleged years-long kickback scheme is outlined in detail in an affidavit written by FBI investigator Wendy Munoz.

Johnson, who has served as the executive of Prince Georges County since 2002, was taken into custody along with his wife, Leslie. They are scheduled to appear late Friday in federal court in Greenbelt, Maryland, just outside Washington.

Johnson had been the Prince Georges County prosecutor prior to his term as executive.

The Honorable Jack B. Johnson County Executive Prince George’s County

The son of hard-working blue-collar parents, Jack B. Johnson took his mother’s advice to heart: Education opens the doors to dreams and aspirations. He embraced his father’s rule of standing up for what is right and wrong. Together his parents instilled in him a set of core values that Mr. Johnson honors to this day: Live in faith, do good deeds, and make a difference in the community . . .
