Massachusetts’ legislature considers law to allow Kennedy

Senator Ted Kennedy’s dying request that Massachusetts law be changed to allow for an interim appointment to his now vacant seat in the U.S. Senate is being debated Thursday, September 17, 2009 at the State House in Boston.

The legislature, which is called The General Court in Massachusetts, is in its 186th session. Speaker of the House Robert DeLeo, a Democrat, said there are enough votes to pass the bill.

Upon passage, the change to election law moves to the Senate as early as tomorrow for a vote. Although Senate Republicans have told the Associated Press they intend to try to block passage, they are outnumbered in Massachusetts by Democrats 35 to 5. According to the clerk of the Senate, filibusters are very rare and almost never last into a second day due to Senate rules.

The legislation enabling Governor Patrick to name a replacement for Ted Kennedy is likely to pass both houses of the legislature very quickly. Patrick is known to be an ally of President Obama.

The appointment is crucial to Democrats nationally because it could create an almost filibuster proof 60 vote majority in the U.S. Senate. Although the Democratic caucus will likely have 60 members, two members of the majority caucus are actually Independents who have chosen to ally with the Democrats.

A new Massachusetts Senator could ensure passage of a health care bill by President Obama’s Thanksgiving deadline.

the elected officials should not be allowed to change a law that kennedy first got changed himself in 2004 because he thought Kerry would win. and he didnt want the GOP governor, Romney, to pick a republican for that seat.

    what a power hungry bastard
