Poll: McCain, Hillary Front-Runners for 2008

A poll released Thursday indicates that John McCain and Hillary Clinton are the early front-runners in New Hampshire for their parties' nomination for president in 2008.

A total of 515 likely voters were asked about 20 potential presidential candidates in the latest Granite State Poll conducted by the University of New Hampshire Survey Center for WMUR-TV.

The largest group of New Hampshire Republicans is supporting McCain, with 32 percent. Former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani is next with 19 percent, followed by Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, with 15 percent. Ten percent said they would vote for Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice. Two percent favor some other candidate and 14 percent are undecided.

Among the less popular potential candidates are Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, Virginia Sen. George Allen, Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and New York Gov. George Pataki.

Among Democrats, Clinton was the favorite, with 30 percent choosing her. John Edwards is next with 16 percent, and Al Gore is at 10 percent. Sen. John Kerry is the choice of 9 percent of Democrats.

Among the less popular choices are Delaware Sen. Joe Biden, retired Gen. Wesley Clark, New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh, and former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner, who announced Thursday that he doesn't plan to run. Four percent prefer some other candidate and 17 percent are undecided.

"It's the first time since 1952 that there's not been an incumbent president or vice president on the ticket, so that means it's wide open," said Andy Smith of the UNH Survey Center.

Those polled also were asked which candidates they liked the least. Among potential Democratic candidates, Hillary Clinton was the least liked by 35 percent of all of the likely voters in both parties, followed by Kerry, Gore, Clark and Edwards. Jeb Bush was least liked by all likely primary voters, followed by McCain, Romney, Rice and Tennessee Sen. Bill Frist.

Democrats said their least liked candidate was Kerry, followed by Gore and then Clinton. Even though they'd vote for him, Republicans said the least popular potential candidate was McCain, followed by Bush, Romney and Pataki.

"What we're seeing right now is name recognition and overall popularity of these candidates based on name recognition," Smith said.

When asked about candidates in the other party, 54 percent of Republicans said their least favorite candidate was Clinton, and 33 percent of Democrats called Bush the most unpopular potential candidate.

Included in the poll were 205 likely Democratic voters in 2008, and 206 likely Republican voters. The sampling margin of error was plus or minus 6.8 percentage points for both groups; it was plus or minus 4.3 percentage points for the total. The poll was conducted by phone between Sept. 15 and Sept. 24.
