Mother and Son Fugitives Turned Over to U.S. Authorities at Buffalo Border Crossing

    (Friday, June 04, 2010)

Buffalo, N.Y.– U.S. Customs and Border Protection Field Operations announced the arrest of two United States citizens wanted in Idaho for parole violations.

On June 3, CBP officers received notification from Canada Border Services Agency that 45-year-old Shelly Olsen and her 19-year-old son Jeffrey David Helmandollar, both United States citizens from Idaho, were being deported from Canada and returned to the United States.

Canadian authorities received information that the mother and son were both living illegally in Canada, and the pair were subsequently arrested by the Toronto Police Fugitive Squad. Record checks by Canadian authorities revealed the possibility of active warrants in the United States. The mother and son were removed from Canada by CBSA yesterday and returned to the United States via the Peace Bridge border crossing in Buffalo, N.Y.

Upon their removal to the United States, CBP officers performed additional record checks and verified that Helmandollar was the subject of a felony, no bond warrant issued by the Idaho State Correctional Institution on December 2, 2009 for parole violation. Helmandollar was originally convicted in 2007 for statutory rape (victim under 18) and possession of a controlled substance. CBP officers further confirmed that Olsen was also wanted for parole violation stemming from a 2008 conviction of possession of Methamphetamine.

CBP officers verified the validity of both warrants and confirmed the extradition. Both subjects were arrested by CBP and turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending extradition to Idaho.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.

I wonder how many people come to the USA illegally for the sole purpose of avoiding prosecution in another country.
