Nebraska Nuclear Plant Lost Cooling System After Fire
By RYAN TRACY
WASHINGTON—A nuclear power plant north of Omaha, Neb., on Tuesday briefly lost the ability to cool a pool of used nuclear fuel after a fire at the site, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission said.
The NRC said the plant recovered cooling ability without activating backup systems and "temperatures in the pool remained at safe levels." The public was not in danger because the plant has been shut down since early April for a refueling outage, the agency said.
Spent fuel pools in the U.S. have received increased scrutiny after a recent crisis in Japan involving potentially overheated nuclear fuel and the release of dangerous radiation.
The agency declared an alert, the second of four emergency classes, at 9:40 a.m., 10 minutes after "an indication of fire" in a building at the plant. The NRC didn't disclose the cause of the fire. Automatic fire control systems activated and the fire was out by 10:20 a.m., the agency said. The plant is operated by the Omaha Public Power District.

Fire knocks out spent fuel cooling pool at nuclear plant near Omaha — Operating under heightened alert level because of nearby flooding on Missouri River.
On June 6, 2011, the Fort Calhoun pressurized water nuclear reactor 20 miles north of Omaha, Nebraska entered emergency status due to imminent flooding from the Missouri River. A day later, there was an electrical fire requiring plant evacuation. Then, on June 8th, NRC event reports confirmed the fire resulted in the loss of cooling for the reactor's spent fuel pool.Join our FIGHT AGAINST illegal immigration & to secure US borders by joining our E-mail Alerts at http://eepurl.com/cktGTn

This is the first this Nebraskan has heard of this. The daily paper we subscribe to had nothing about it.

Nebraska nuclear plant to require more oversight at Nebraska's Cooper Nuclear Plant
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

OMAHA, Neb. — Federal regulators say southeast Nebraska's Cooper Nuclear Station will receive more oversight.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission on Monday says it's requiring additional oversight because of problems with procedures to shut down the plant in the event of some fires.
The NRC in a statement focuses on procedures to manually operate values that are part of a coolant injection system. That system provides water to cool the reactor during certain accidents involving the loss of coolant.
The NRC says the violation is of low-to-moderate safety significance, and is based on an inspection completed in March.
The plant at Brownville is operated by the Nebraska Public Power District. NPPD spokeswoman Jeanne (jean) Schieffer (SHE'-fer) says the company accepts the NRC's decision and will work with the agency going forward.
