ABOUT E-VERIFY

E-Verify is a web-based system that allows enrolled employers to confirm the eligibility of their employees to work in the United States. E-Verify employers verify the identity and employment eligibility of newly hired employees by electronically matching information provided by employees on the Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification, against records available to the Social Security Administration (SSA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

E-Verify is a voluntary program. However, employers with federal contracts or subcontracts that contain the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) E-Verifyclause are required to enroll in E-Verify as a condition of federal contracting.

Employers may also be required to participate in E-Verify if their states have legislation mandating the use of E-Verify, such as a condition of business licensing. Finally, in some instances employers may be required to participate in E-Verify as a result of a legal ruling.

E-Verify, which is available in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands, is currently the best means available to electronically confirm employment eligibility.

Fox and Friends needs to interview someone from the E-Verify program and tout all of its advantages to American Workers as well as American Employers, because it not only helps our workers, it helps our businesses be legal employers, too, so they can stay out of trouble.

E-Verify is a voluntary program.

And that is the problem. E-Verify needs to be nationally mandated!

I think a lot more companies would sign up if it was better promoted. Really MW, I hate to break your authoritarian heart, but not everything in this country has to be mandated to convince more people to do it. The criminals, crooks, cheater and thugs are going to cheat whether you "mandate" or not.

You're off in a world all your own at times and sniping at me on this issue validates that. I'm betting a huge majority of those of us that support border security and are anti-illegal alien support nationally mandating the E-Verify program.

Continue making it voluntary and the bad players will continue hiring illegal aliens. Why would any employer voluntarily enter the program when they are purposely hiring illegals? However, making it mandatory will make it easier to distinguish the bad player from the good ones. Additionally, nationally mandating the program through law will make it easier to prosecute employers not playing by the rules.

How many years have people been trying to pass mandated E-Verify? 10 years? 13 years? Until a law passes, advertise and promote it. The more people who know about it and its ease of use and advantages, the more who will sign up for it. The more who sign up for it, the easier it will be to pass the legislation.

Support it, yes. But mandate it, no! Any company that hires illegals is liable whether they enroll in E-Verify or not. And that is how it should be.
