PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — It’s like Facebook, but for rich people. A new social network has officially launched.

“Netropolitan” creator James Touchi-Peters calls his new social network an online community for affluent and busy people.
“We are leaving the purpose of the service up to the members,” Touchi-Peters says. “It could be used for any and all purposes, Social, personal, professional, business, any and all ways.”

Netropolitan operates on the “follower” method like Twitter and Instagram. The technology is not new, but the business model is. It costs $9,000 to join.

“People are use to paying initiation fees for social clubs,” Touchi-Peters says, “and country clubs in the real world”
So what does that $9,000 get you?

“We’re selling privacy and security,” Touchi-Peters says. “We’ve gone to great enormous lengths to make the network is as private and secure as possible. I would say its way more secure frankly than a banking website.”

The Netropolitan website is password protected and all transmission to and from the service are encrypted.
