New York governor declares disaster emergency after polio found in wastewater

    2h ago

(Reuters) -New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state disaster emergency on Friday after samples of the polio virus were discovered in wastewater in three counties outside of New York City.

Hochul's executive order came more than a month after an adult in Rockland County, north of New York City, was diagnosed with the disease in July. It was the first confirmed case of polio in the United States in nearly a decade.
The declaration would expand the number of people authorized to administer polio vaccines and other steps to accelerate inoculation rates. The state of emergency will stay in effect until October 9.

The polio virus was present in wastewater samples collected as early as April, Hochul's executive order said.
Virus was detected in wastewater samples taken in Orange, Rockland and Sullivan counties every month since April, indicating the virus was present in the state before the Rockland County case was found in July.
After the disease was detected, New York officials began urging unvaccinated residents to get polio vacations. While people of all ages are under threat, the virus primarily affects children aged three and younger.
Polio can cause irreversible paralysis in some cases, but it can be prevented by a vaccine first made available in 1955. There is no known cure. Three injections of the vaccine provide nearly 100% immunity.

A poliovirus, the causative agent of polio (also known as poliomyelitis), is a serotype of the species Enterovirus C, in the family of Picornaviridae. There are three poliovirus serotypes: types 1, 2, and 3.
Poliovirus is composed of an RNA genome and a protein capsid. The genome is a single-stranded positive-sense RNA (+ssRNA) genome that is about 7500 nucleotides long.

New York declares state of emergency amid growing number of polio cases

Simon Druker - Yesterday 2:38 PM

Sept. 9 (UPI) -- New York Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state disaster emergency Friday over the rising number of polio cases being detected in wastewater in multiple jurisdictions.

Hochul made the declaration in an executive order because of "evidence of circulating poliovirus," with Nassau County, N.Y., the latest to detect it.
The declaration runs through Oct. 9 and increases the availability of state resources in affected areas.
Polio was declared eliminated in the United States in 1979, primarily due to high vaccination rates. But there has been a recent outbreak of cases.
A case of paralytic polio was identified July 21 in an unvaccinated resident of Rockland County, N.Y. The person had no international travel during the incubation period for the paralytic virus.
Friday's confirmed case in Nassau County has been genetically linked to the case in Rockland County, state health officials confirmed.

In mid-August, health officials in New York City confirmed the polio virus in sewage after other recent discoveries elsewhere in the state.

Authorities have been publicly urging people to get vaccinated against polio. People can spread the virus even if they do not know they are sick, and asymptomatic spread is a high concern among health officials.
"On polio, we simply cannot roll the dice," State Health Commissioner Dr. Mary Bassett said in a statement.
"If you or your child are unvaccinated or not up to date with vaccinations, the risk of paralytic disease is real. I urge New Yorkers to not accept any risk at all.
"Polio immunization is safe and effective -- protecting nearly all people against disease who receive the recommended doses. Do not wait to vaccinate.
"If you are unsure of you or your families' vaccination status, contact a healthcare provider, clinic, or local county health department to make sure you and your loved ones receive all recommended doses."
Polio can be a life-threatening illness. The virus is spread from person-to-person and enters the body through the mouth, usually from hands contaminated with the stool of an infected person.
