LAS CRUCES — A stolen big rig loaded with copper has sparked a call for information and a hefty reward.

Las Cruces Crime Stoppers and Rocky Mountain Transport are offering a combined $2,000 reward for information that leads an arrest in the theft of a tractor-trailer and it's cargo.

On April 3, Las Cruces police officers responded to 1835 west Amador Ave., near Burn Lake, where a tractor-trailer was reported stolen. Officers learned that a brown tractor-trailer with "Rocky Mountain Transport" on both doors, the number "27" on the hood, and a blue trailer loaded with 44,000 pounds of copper bails were last seen at around 6 p.m. the previous day inside a secured fence.

The truck and trailer were found later that day at the Petro fuel station off Interstate 10 in Canutillo. However, the full contents of the trailer - an estimated $175,000 in copper - had been unloaded. Accessories for the truck also were discovered missing.

Rocky Mountain Transport's portion of the reward, $1,000, is valid for information leading to the arrest of person or persons before Oct. 31, 2008.

If you have any information regarding this crime, or any other crimes, you can call Las Cruces Crime Stoppers at 526-8000 or from outside the Las Cruces area at 1-800-897-2746.

The Crime Stoppers number is operational 24 hours a day and you do not have to give your name to collect a reward.
