WEST NYACK, N.Y. — A New York county GOP leader was arrested on shoplifting charges, but he says it was all a mistake.

Vincent Reda, chairman of the Republican Party in Rockland County, says that he went to return a $198 pea coat at Macy’s in West Nyack last Sunday. He says a security tag went off after he passed a front-door gate.

Police say the 76-year-old politician removed the coat from the store, put it in a plastic bag and tried to leave.

Reda faces misdemeanor charges of petty larceny and criminal possession of stolen property. If convicted, he faces up to a year in prison. He is set to appear in court on Jan. 12.
