Kraft Foods may have waited up to six months before passing along news about a positive salmonella test of pistachios shipped from a Tulare County plant, an official involved in the case said today. Lee Cohen, a production manager for Setton International Foods in Commack, N.Y., said his company's sister plant, Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella, first heard about a September 2008 positive test from Kraft on March 24. He says those tainted nuts were found in a snack mix.
Food and Drug Administration food safety official Dr. David Acheson says he thinks Kraft destroyed or recalled the tainted trail mix.
Kraft did not immediately respond to questions seeking comment.

Setton Pistachio recalled 2 million pounds of pistachios on Monday after a Kraft manufacturer found salmonella in another batch of roasted pistachios March 20. Federal regulators have warned the public not to eat any pistachios until further notice.
