LARGO, Fla. – It’s right and proper congressional leaders honor one of their own at a funeral.

PAYING RESPECT: Pinellas County Sheriff’s Deputy David Schafer exits during the public visitation for C.W. “Bill” Young Wednesday in Pinellas Park, Fla.

But it’s plain wrong for those congressional leaders to hijack a U.S. Air Force jet to sweep into this Gulf of Mexico town to attend Thursday’s funeral for the late-U.S. Rep. C.W. “Bill” Young.

Nancy Pelosi, John Boehner, Eric Cantor and others will be flying into Clearwater-St. Petersburg International Airport and making the 9.2-mile trip to Indian Rock Baptist Church for the funeral services. The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Department is arranging to have the group bused to the church.
But why use an Air Force jet for the trip. Why can’t these pillars of politics fly commercial?

Granted, Tampa International Airport is 21.6 miles from the church, but with police escorts traffic isn’t going to be an issue for the Beltway entourage.
A quick search of the flight site Orbitz.com found dozens of non-stop flights from the national’s capital to Tampa International, and an equal number of return flights later in the afternoon and into the evening.

It’s a blatant waste of taxpayer dollars coming on the heels of a government shutdown and endless scandals detailing misuse of public assets.

It’s just stupid.
