SAN ANTONIO (AP) — San Antonio officials are expressing concern about plans to honor early "Anglo American lawyers" at Alamo Plaza.

The state and county historical commissions have approved the State Bar of Texas' plan to place a plaque on the plaza honoring lawyers like Sam Houston who exercised the right of assembly and petition under Mexican rule.

But the city's historic and design commission is concerned that the sign singling out a specific profession and ethnicity might create a precedent for all sorts of future markers at the flagstone-paved plaza in front of the famed landmark.

A vote on the sign failed to get the two-thirds required for passage on Wednesday.
