Police: 8 teens shot at Indiana skate rink

Police: 8 teens shot at Indiana skate rink

    From Patty Lane, CNN
    March 6, 2010 10:42 p.m. EST

(CNN) -- Eight teenagers were wounded in a shooting Friday night at a skating rink in Gary, Indiana, police said Saturday.

Gary Police Department spokeswoman Cpl. Gabrielle King said that a fight broke out during or after the concert at the World of Skates roller rink on Friday, prompting the rink's manager to close up for the night.

"The manager asked everybody to leave, and when they went outside somebody just decided they would open fire and eight young people were shot," she said.

She said those wounded range in age from age 14 to 18. They were taken to local hospitals, although King said none has life-threatening injuries.

She was not certain if any remained hospitalized Saturday. No arrests have been made, she said.

A phone call to World of Skates was not immediately returned.

It is sad to hear about that kind of stuff. Unfortunately in South Florida you see it often. We had it in the Liberty City area of Miami when a gun man opened fire on a group of people playing dominos and in Overtown some gang member had a block party and 8 people were shot and 2 died. One of those cases will be shown on the A&E show The First 48. Last weekend there was a BBQ in memory of a family member and some thugs drove by and opened fire on the people. Five were shot.

One of the victims told police he was shot in the stomach by a male black holding a rifle. He said the man was wearing a red hat and had dreadlocks.

The wounded were transported to Methodist Hospitals Northlake in Gary, St. Catherine's Hospital in East Chicago and St. Margaret Mercy Health Care Center in Hammond.

Another victim said he was with a group of friends and they were asked to leave to avoid a fight with a group of males he didn't know. He said the suspects confronted him in the parking lot and someone started shooting. The teen suffered a gunshot wound to his left leg and was taken to St. Margaret's.

Another victim told police he was inside Skate World and the crowd became disorderly. Security told the crowd to exit and when he stepped outside, he was shot in the left leg.

Police identified the wounded as: Shaquille Hughes, 15, shot in right side; Marcus Ratliff,14, shot in right wrist; Justin Bodley, 16, shot in the leg; Junan Washington, 18, shot in left ankle; DaVonte Biddings, 16, shot once in back; Marquel Croock, 16, shot in stomach; Kesean Philon, 14, shot in left leg; Stephan Danzy, 17, shot in left leg.

Gary police are investigating the incident.

Unfortunately this is no different than the stuff that the City of Miami and Miami Dade Police see on a regular basis. It often boils down to someone thinking another disrespected him or looked funny at him. That is often from the gangsta culture. I wonder if the concert was a rap or hip hop one.
