Police in South Dakota arrested a self-proclaimed member of the violent leftist group Antifa who had a “concerning” cache of firearms, bomb-making materials, and an Antifa manifesto in his possession.

Police in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, originally arrested Mark Christopher Einerwold, 43, on July 17 on charges of burglary, but upon serving a warrant at his home, officers discovered “concerning” evidence that he may have been planning something bigger, KELO reported.

In his Blaine Avenue home, investigators discovered bomb-making materials along with illegal firearms and accessories. The materials included ammonium nitrate and aluminum powder, a sawed-off shotgun, and a homemade rifle silencer, police said.

Minnehaha County Sheriff Capt. Jason Gearman noted that the chemicals were “identified as ammonium nitrate and aluminum powder mixed together, which that compound, there is no legal purpose for it. It is an explosive.”

Burglary suspect found with 'concerning' amount of bomb-making materials

Authorities discovered a "concerning" amount of bomb-making equipment and illegal guns after a man was arrested on burglary charges in Sioux Falls on Tuesday night.

Police said that Einerwold has an “extreme hatred for police, fire, and government.” Capt. Gearman added that they feel they stopped the suspect from some greater incident. “It’s safe to say we stopped something from happening. We don’t know what that is,” Gearman said.
Einerwold was also found in possession of a rambling anti-government Antifa manifesto, and a jacket with the word Antifa emblazoned across it.

Antifa is a radical left-wing anarchist group that engages in violent means to protest what it claims are “fascist” political ideas.

Einerwold is in jail on the original burglary charges and is being held on a $200,000 cash-only bond, but authorities are expected to heap more charges upon him next week. He has been afforded a court-appointed attorney.

Authorities say Mark Einerwold had bomb-making equipment and illegal weapons in his possession when he was arrested on burglary charges Tuesday — as well as connections to the left-wing group Antifa, citing an anti-government manifesto and a jacket found in his home.

The story has taken off in right-wing media, leading to headlines like "Cop-hating Antifa terrorist caught with explosives" and "Leftist Antifa terrorist arrested with bombs with plans to sell to friends to kill law enforcement."

But Einerwold's brother says that Mark is about as far from Antifa as you can get.

"He's conservative, he's pro-gun rights," Bob Einerwold said in an interview. "He can't stand liberals."

Asked about the presence of a jacket with the word "Antifa" on it in his home, Bob Einerwold said, "He didn't wear it out of pride, I can tell you that."

Indeed, if Mark Einerwold was a leftist terrorist, his social media cover was impeccable.

On June 15, he shared an ABC News post regarding Antifa, commenting, "This is what the social justice looks like. These are the people taking over our campuses. They are militant, they are dangerous."

His Facebook likes are filled with conservative pundits and pro-Second Amendment pages, and he appeared to run a Facebook page called "Defend the 2nd Protect the Constitution" that decried how groups such as Antifa and Black Lives Matter were harming the country.

The page was a replacement for another that Mark Einerwold said was over 8-years-old and 100,000 members strong, which he said Facebook shut down in an effort to censor conservative speech.

That deletion was the subject of one of the few tweets on Mark Einerwold's Twitter page — directed at President Donald Trump on June 12 — where he said,

"I'm sure it will not be seen, but Facebook is killing free speech, they deleted an 8-year-old page 100 [sic] of thousands of followers for 'micro hate speech' I just give the facts on our constitution and what it means, especially the 2nd, 1st and 4th. But they took my money happily."

Bob Einerwold said a lot of the things his brother did online were intended "to stir up controversy" and draw people to his website.
"The more people he can stir up on Facebook, the more shirts he sells," Bob Einerwold said.

He doesn't believe Mark was making any bombs, or had any intention of harming anyone, saying that, "I am positive he was not making bombs. He might have been practicing to make a smoke grenade. He would never make a bomb."

"It'll come out in the trial," Bob Einerwold said. "All theories are just theories now, like JFK."

Authorities served a search warrant on Mark Einerwold's house at 1112 S. Blaine Ave. on Tuesday on burglary charges.

As they searched, they found bomb-making materials, illegal weapons and an improvised explosive device.

"The amount of explosives found was significant and concerning," Minnehaha County Sheriff Mike Milstead said.

Milstead said the question about an Antifa affiliation arose when a member of the media spotted the jacket at the scene of the arrest and asked authorities about it.

When asked about whether there was evidence that Einerwold had connections with Antifa other than the jacket, Milstead responded, “I don’t know that there is.”

The Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating Einerwold, including a possible connection to Antifa, Milstead said.

"It’s something that investigators are aware of," he said.

He did not get into specifics about Einerwold’s social media life, but said investigators are looking into that, as well.

Milstead described the writings found in Einerwold’s home as “extremely threatening” toward law enforcement, fire departments and the government, but declined to say whether there were specific threats contained therein.

Milstead said law enforcement found “numerous” copies of a manifesto that were paper clipped together inside Einerwold’s residence.

What the sheriff’s office is trying to figure out, Milstead said, is why Einerwold had so many copies and what he planned to do with them.

“Was he going to give them to other people? Were they going to be distributed at the scene of something? We don’t know,” Milstead said.

Right-wing media called him a leftist terrorist. He appears to be a pro-gun conservative

After he was arrested earlier this week by authorities in South Dakota, Mark Einerwold immediately became a character in an ongoing narrative within conservative media, where he was depicted as the latest example of a left-wing domestic terror threat.

Headlines from a variety of right-leaning outlets asserted that Einerwold was a member of "Antifa," the radical anti-fascist group that has reportedly been accused of domestic terrorism by the Department of Homeland Security and has been the subject of stories on the likes of Fox News and Breitbart.

Einerwold was arrested on Tuesday in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on burglary charges for thefts in surrounding communities. Law enforcement there said they found bomb-making materials and illegal guns in his home, as well as a two-page anti-government document and a jacket that contained the word "Antifa" in his car.

But a cursory glance at Einerwold's Facebook account suggests that he is anything but supportive of Antifa. The profile is littered with pro-Second Amendment memes, and posts that lionize the American flag and criticize welfare recipients.

His "likes" include the Tea Party, online conservative personality Graham Allen and the pro-police movement Blue Lives Matter. Just last month, in fact, Einerwold posted a news report about Antifa -- though he hardly endorsed the group. "This is what the social justice looks like," he wrote.

"These are the people taking over our campuses. They are militant, they are dangerous."

Minnehaha County Sheriff Mike Milstead told CNN that local reporters spotted the jacket as police removed it from Einerwold's vehicle.

The day after the arrest, Minnehaha County Sheriff's Captain Jason Gearman said at a press briefing that the "association with Antifa really concerns us."

Milstead said the jacket remains Einerwold's "only link" to Antifa, but that singular detail soon echoed throughout the right-wing media sphere.

The fringe website Gateway Pundit picked up on the story, running the headline: "Leftist Antifa Terrorist Arrested with Bombs with Plans to Sell to Friends to Kill Law Enforcement." The conspiratorial website InfoWars ran a similar headline for a story written by editor-at-large Paul Joseph Watson: "Cop-Hating Antifa Terrorist Caught With Explosives." And the narrative was pushed by Laura Loomer, a far-right personality, who claimed that Einerwold is representative of the anti-Trump movement.

"This is the 'resistance' the Democrats keep telling you to become a member of!" Loomer tweeted to her 196,000 followers.

Jim Hoft, the proprietor of Gateway Pundit, could not be reached because his voicemail inbox is full. Watson did not respond to a request for comment.

Loomer, who tweeted out a piece about Einerwold that was published by Big League Politics, responded to a direct message on Twitter by pointing out that she "didn't write the story."

She said in a subsequent message that she would cover the matter even if Einerwold turned out to be a supporter of President Donald Trump.

"It's all newsworthy," Loomer said. "We shall see."

Luke Rohlfing, the author of the Big League Politics story, did not respond to a request for comment.

Meanwhile, Einerwold's brother, Bob, insists that all of these descriptions are wildly off the mark. "He's conservative, he's pro-gun rights," Bob Einerwold told the Argus Leader of Sioux Falls. "He can't stand liberals." As for the Antifa" jacket, Bob said, "He didn't wear it out of pride, I can tell you that."

Bob Einerwold could not be reached for comment.

In an interview with CNN on Friday morning, Milstead said the coverage of the arrest went beyond the scope of his department's current findings. He said investigators are aware of Einerwold's social media footprint.

"We never definitively said he's a terrorist but that's what's being reported in some places," Milstead said. "We don't know what his intent was."

"It's something that we've learned is uncontrollable," he said of the media coverage. "People will take stories and it's a little like uncontrolled filtering; it gets changed every time it's told. But that's something we have no control over. We're in the middle of an investigation."
