Officials said city police were conducting a criminal investigation and tracked the suspect to the NCCU campus after receiving a tip he had fled to that area. Both campus and city police officials responded at approximately 10:15 p.m. Monday, prompting an immediate lockdown for the campus and the surrounding neighborhood that lasted until just after 1 a.m. Tuesday, according to a statement from NCCU Chancellor Debra Saunders-White. It is not clear why police were pursuing the man or what crime he allegedly committed.

Shortly before midnight, police found the man in a wooded area near the southeast part of campus, where police said he challenged them with a gun, campus Police Chief Tim Bellamy told local CBS affiliate WRAL. Although the man's name has not been released, police said he was not a student and no injuries have been reported, according to the Associated Press.

Saunders-White said in the statement that counseling services will be available and activities and classes on Tuesday would be temporarily relocated from the School of Education building, located near the scene.

"I applaud the NCCU Police for their responsiveness and vigilance in keeping our campus safe," Saunders-White said. "NCCU is committed to supporting our community during this time."
