Rape suspect arrested, could be tied to 3 counties

BROOKHAVEN, Ga. —
Police tracked down and arrested a man they said is wanted in a string of brutal attacksacross at least three metro counties.

Now another woman has come forward and walked Channel 2’s Tyisha Fernandes through her violent attack.

Police told us they are investigating if the man they arrested is connected to not only this latest victim, but also several others across the metro area.

So far the Brookhaven Police Department is the only agency that named Roberto Gaona Pina as its official suspect.

Other police agencies believe he may be involved in their sexual cases, but they were waiting on his capture to investigate further.

Police arrested him in Opelika, Alabama this afternoon.

The latest woman who has come forward told Fernandes that Pina pulled her into these woods and sexually assaulted her last year.

“He was on top of me, biting me,” the woman said, asking not to be identified.

She showed Fernandes that even a year after the rape allegedly happened, the scars are still there, physically and mentally.

“Just recalling the moments that I lived, I was scared, feeling that somebody can kill you,” the woman told Fernandes.

“Thanks to an alert citizen, he did get caught,” said Robert Amnicki with the Brookhaven Police Department.

Police have been looking for Pina since they said he raped another woman a month ago on Buford Highway in Brookhaven.

Police told Fernandes they knew he was hiding in Alabama, so they posted his picture everywhere.

It worked, according to police. A woman there called 911, saying Pina was loitering outside a convenience store.

Pina was arrested and is being extradited back to Brookhaven to face sexual assault charges.
