Renewed Effort to Raise Test Scores of Black and Latino Students

08/17/2007 - State Schools Superintendent, Jack O'Connell met with educators and members of the African-American community in Sacramento.

He's concerned about the results from the latest round of standardized testing that show Caucasian and Asian students from middle class families scored much higher than African-American and Hispanic students in the same category.
O'Connell said the numbers show the problem isn't just the economic gap. "We have achievement gaps in our system. These gaps are real, they're glaring, they're stark and they're persistent."

The Superintendent says his office will work on curriculum changes and creating more programs that focus on homework, to try to make a difference. O'Connell says he also wants to see more help from businesses, churches and community organizations.

Why haven't they figured it out yet that it's not the schools, but the student and the parents WHO ARE FAILING! This is all a cultural issue and nothing more. It always has been, and it seems it will always be. Can you imagine where Hispanics would be today if illegals were stopped years ago.
