Fox News generates post-debate buzz around Fed-Insider Herman Cain, obscures Ron Paul

Glorified Tea Party candidate Cain holds establishment values: pro-war, pro-Federal Reserve, pro-bailout and more

    May 6, 2011

The Fox News-led GOP debate last night in South Carolina gave the first formal glimpse of the emerging 2012 GOP presidential field, though more thought was perhaps spent on the presumptive (selected & vetted by the establishment) big name contenders who have yet to enter or debate. Congressman Ron Paul was perhaps the most well-known face next to a field otherwise unseen in 2008. With him were former Senator Rick Santorum, former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty, businessman and former KC Federal Reserve chair Herman Cain and former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson.

After the debate, an artificial-esque buzz quickly centered around Herman Cain, who has positioned himself as a Tea Party candidate and gained popularity for his ‘tough’ rhetoric.

A Fox-focus group fielded by the notorious Frank Luntz quickly established that Herman Cain had won the debate (in lieu of a poll, apparently). Cain charmed a majority of the 29 handpicked and carefully-handled likely Republicans in Luntz’s focus group. After all, he’s a fresh face, he talks about smaller government, ending the economic crisis and he’s a successful businessman.

Just as in 2008 with dud-candidate Fred Thompson, Luntz used the perception of a quick turn-around of support to promote the candidate as a possible front runner. Luntz declared the reaction to Cain as “unprecendentedâ€

I have seen clips of him speak, but never anything of substance. He sure can deliver a speech though (see below).
Funny, we could say the same things about Obama that this writer uses against Herman Cain. Personally, Cain getting the Republican nomination would completely take the race card out of Obama's bag of tricks.

I am a little confused here on ALIPAC today.

Ron Paul scored a F on illegal immigration by NumbersUSA.

Has William Gheen come out in support of Ron Paul now?
Ron Paul in 2011 "[...]no amnesty should be granted. Maybe a 'green card' with an asterisk should be issued[...]a much better option than deportation."

To my knowledge he has not made an endorsement of anyone in 2012

I don't think any of these candidates had much to say. The Ron Paul version of a non-imperial, restricted-to-national-defense version of foreign policy might keep us out of senseless foreign wars. However, our whole financial system, including retirement pensions for most Americans, depends upon protection of our overseas investments. People like Hugo Chavez, Evo Morales or Admadinejad might like to usurp those under claims of national sovereignty, therefore that presents a critical foreign policy issue. I'm also startled when I hear the libertarian views on domestic issues-----some of which would radically transform our culture and could lead to an enlarged government, not a reduced one. In moral issues, I would rather see governance by at least social conservatives, rather than an unlimited personal liberty that will lead to licentiousness.

The former governor, Gary Johnson, of New Mexico had some good things to say about always evaluating cost effectiveness of policies. There is plenty of waste in our government, and I would agree with him as long as cost-effectiveness is not the ONLY evaluation. Some things are not so simple as to boil down to dollars and cents, which some libertarians do when they get into cost analysis.

Herman Cain scored some points, IMO. I think he easily sees through the posturing from Obama; and his running should shut up the liberal media that is always screaming "racist" at anyone who opposes Obama. Whether he can handle all the requirements of being President, I don't know, nor how likely their individual chances are, but if they put their heads together they could come up with a platform that would trump the Dems.
