'Roseanne' delivers big ratings in much-awaited ABC return

'Roseanne' delivers big ratings in much-awaited ABC return

    Bill Keveney, USA TODAY Published 1:03 p.m. ET March 28, 2018 | Updated 7:19 p.m. ET March 28, 2018

Roseanne's premiere ratings are as big, bold and brassy as the series and its star.

The Roseanne Barr comedy, returning to ABC two decades after it ended its first run, averaged 18.2 million viewers, more than doubling its competitors in young-adult ratings for Tuesday's hourlong premiere, according to Nielsen.

In both categories, Roseanne was the top regularly scheduled broadcast this season, and the premiere even outpaced (by 10%) the 16.6 million recorded for its May 1997 series finale.

The return was much larger than the premiere of another original-cast revival, NBC's Will & Grace, which opened to 10.2 million viewers last September. A third season has been added to its two-season order. Another original-cast comedy, CBS's Murphy Brown, is in the works for fall.

Roseanne towered over tough competition, CBS's NCIS and NBC's The Voice, and delivered ABC's best results in the time period since 2006. It scored the highest rating for a comedy since The Big Bang Theory's 2014 fall premiere.

Roseanne's strong opening helped the ABC comedy that followed. Black-ish (8.7 million) drew its second-biggest audience.

One member of the first family, Donald Jr., congratulated Barr on her ratings success via tweet and suggested that the actress, who is a Trump supporter both onscreen and off, consider moonlighting as a late-night host. "Seems there’s some demand for an alternate viewpoint," he noted.

Great!! I've got a feeling Ann C. will be traded in for Roseanne B.

Listening to some of the talk, they say ABC took a chance putting on a show that is not strictly left wing. But ABC recently cancelled a very popular show "Last Man Standing" starring Tim Allen, allegedly because of its right wing leanings. Neither show is a constant hammer of any political position.

Also, what I see in them bringing back Roseanne, Will & Grace, and the like, is these had good comedy writing, something missing in most recent programs. I hope Roseanne can keep it up. I enjoy many of the older programs because they were fun. I watch Johnny Carson rather than any of the current mouthpieces who are often offensive. Maybe I miss all those stars of yesterday who weren't so controversial.

I really commend ABC for supporting Roseanne's new show. I think a lot of Americans are going to enjoy it a lot. I hope so anyway. Americans need some fun, some good laughs, and coming together even if you don't agree on everything.
