Thread: Seattle U Students Take Over Dean's Office, Demand School ‘Decentralize Whiteness’

Students at Seattle University say the college’s current curriculum is utterly stifling, and they have taken over Dean Jodi Kelly's office and refuse to leave unless she resigns and the school meets their lengthy list of demands for changes.

At the top of the list: the students want the school to adopt a new curriculum that “decentralizes Whiteness and has a critical focus on the evolution of systems of oppression such as racism, capitalism, colonialism, etc.”

They want 'professors of color and queer professors' who will place particular emphasis not on traditional educational concepts but instead on “racism, gentrification, sexism, colonialism, imperialism, global white supremacy, and other ethical questions about systems of power.”

Protesting student Fiza Muhammad said the intention is to undermine the focus on the Western canon, which is merely writings of old, racist, sexist white men.

“I can count on one hand how many people of color I’ve read in the four years that I’ve been here,” she said.

The students also demanded "re-education" for the school's professors so they can deal with micro-aggressions more effectively. “We demand that every faculty member in Matteo Ricci College undergo a training from an anti-racist network in Seattle, such as The People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond,” the list says.

According to a report, students have set up their occupation with pillows, pizza and a speaker system to listen to Beyonce's new album.

Slog reader Maria Martin believes the students occupying the Matteo Ricci college at Seattle University—demanding a less Eurocentric curriculum, a more diverse facutly, and the resignation of their dean, Jodi Kelly—have some valid concerns, but they're going about things all wrong. She e-mailed this response to our coverage:

They seem to be anti-American and filled with the racism that has been displayed by the demon obama. He is the absolute worst president ever.

He was never vetted properly and stole the WH with subversive tactics & help from his open borders agenda crowd. And of course those feeling forced to deny pride in their own heritage for the sake of elevating a black family to the WH. With all the racist appointees he has made, it is a big step backwards for America. The wrong direction for a prosperous, peaceful, loving America.

His immediate hispanic agenda upon moving into the WH proves he is a puppet put in office to continue the open borders agenda. GW has plenty of blame also & equally bad t on that & middle east war issues, saudi connection.

His background of communist grandparents, association with Ayers, Rev Wright, Black Panthers, muslim upbringing, muslim brotherhood, birther issues. proposed crack head homosexual that is releasing drug criminals legal & illegal from prisons & the overbearing promotion of queer lifestyle predominance in our schools, public bathrooms - all around incompetence that is not fitting for a president of USA. Can't think of anything positive that came from his terms.

He certainly has no regard for American citizens. His black college speech said children have no choice but to sell drugs - well with him allowing those south of the border to take all kinds of jobs, he is the cause of nothing better to do in poor communities. He cannot speak truth and muslims are taught/allowed to be deceitful.
