Medical personnel on Wednesday responded to the second stabbing involving a Utah State Prison inmate in as many days.

However, Wednesday’s incident, thought self-inflicted, resulted in non-life threatening injuries to a 34-year-old male prisoner. He was being treated in the prison’s infirmary about 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Corrections spokesman said Unified Fire Department paramedics were initially called and a medical helicopter put on standby, but both were cancelled once the inmate’s injuries were deemed treatable on prison grounds.

Meantime, a 25-year-old inmate stabbed in the chest during a suspected prison gang dispute on Tuesday remained in critical but stable condition Wednesday.

Gehrke said the victim’s cellmate was suspected in the attack. He had no further details on the incident, saying it had been turned over to the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Department for investigation.

Prison officials did not release the names of the inmates involved in the incidents.
