Sen. Byron Dorgan: End the 'Failed' Cuba Embargo

Sen. Byron Dorgan: End the 'Failed' Cuba Embargo
    Tuesday, March 31, 2009 3:03 PM

WASHINGTON -- Senators of both political parties say the ban on travel to Cuba has done little to undermine the Castro government and it is time to allow American visits to the island nation.

The lawmakers say they have the votes in both the House and Senate to end the ban that has effectively eliminated Cuba as a travel destination for most Americans for almost half a century.

North Dakota Sen. Byron Dorgan, one of the sponsors of the legislation, said the travel ban "is a failed policy that has failed for 50 years." Identical legislation has been introduced in the House.

President Barack Obama has called for a new strategy toward Cuba, and has already backed some rules changes making it easier for Cuban-Americans to visit their relatives on Cuba.

Re: Sen. Byron Dorgan: End the 'Failed' Cuba Embargo

    And what's failed about it?

Prohibiting Americans from travelling to Cuba has kept billions of dollars out of the hands of a government not interested in providing for it's own citizens, and has probably prevented untold numbers of Americans from being jailed in Cuba for whatever trumped up charges such a government would find for doing so.

Here's an idea.......do away with the wet foot/dry foot policy, keep the bans in place where Cuba is concerned and let it sink into the sea for all I care.

And here's another thought........secure our border with Mexico, impose similar bans on THAT armpit and you just might be amazed at what happens

You would think so but that would take people with functioning brains and without hidden agendas.

As we both know NB, those find themselves greatly outnumbered in DC these days

Either way though, I doubt we will see a decrease.....and most likely a huge increase.....in IAs trundling in from Cuba regardless of what we do

"Miguel, Row Your Boat Ashore" and all that......
