2 dead in shooting at Army base in Texas

Shooting was at a small grocery store on Fort Bliss Advertisement

    updated 3 minutes ago

The Fort Bliss commander says two people are dead after a shooting at a small grocery store on the West Texas Army post.

Col. Joseph A. Simonelli Jr. declined to discuss details or identify the victims of the Monday afternoon incident.

Simonelli said the area was roped off for an FBI investigation, but the sprawling facility next to El Paso was never under lockdown.

Simonelli says the shooting was reported about 3 p.m. local time and authorities responded in about three minutes.

Three shot on Army base near El Paso

From Larry Shaughnessy, CNN Pentagon Producer
    September 20, 2010 7:58 p.m. EDT

The gunman was shot and killed by law enforcement officers on the base, officials say.

(CNN) -- The FBI is on its way to Fort Bliss in west Texas to investigate a shooting at a convenience store on the base that left a man dead and two women wounded, according to base spokesman Dieter Jester.

The man, who authorities say shot the females, was shot and killed by law enforcement officers on the base.

It's unclear what may have been the motive for the shooting or even if the man or his victims are in the military, or are civilians.

The police officers who killed the alleged gunman responded within three to four minutes because their offices are very near the base shopping area.

Fort Bliss is located close to the Mexican border near El Paso, Texas, but straddles the Texas-New Mexico border. Most of the base is located in New Mexico, but the main headquarters is in Texas.

The base is home to the First Armored Division. President Barack Obama visited there last month to meet the troops and mark the end of the official combat mission in Iraq.

FBI: Fort Bliss gunman was retired Army sergeant

FORT BLISS, Texas – The FBI is investigating why a retired Army sergeant walked into a Fort Bliss convenience store and shot two employees, one fatally, before he was gunned down by responding officers, the agency said Tuesday.

Authorities did not know whether gunman Steven Kropf, 63, of El Paso, had any relationship with either victim, the FBI said in a Tuesday statement, which described the Monday shooting at the West Texas Army post as an isolated incident.

Bettina Maria Goins, 44, of El Paso was pronounced dead at a military hospital where she was rushed immediately after the shooting, and another woman remained hospitalized Tuesday with serious injuries, the FBI said.

Both women were civilian employees of the Army & Air Force Exchange Service, which runs merchandise operations for the military, including fast-food restaurants and convenience stores.

Post commander Col. Joseph Simonelli Jr. said officers responded to reports of the shooting in less than three minutes and killed the gunman. The post was not put on lockdown, but traffic was directed around the store where the shooting occurred, Simonelli said.

The shooting came nearly 11 months after 13 people were killed in a shooting rampage at Fort Hood in central Texas near Killeen. Maj. Nidal Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, is charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder in the Nov. 5 shootings.

Hasan, 40, was paralyzed in the shooting and remains jailed. An Article 32 hearing — similar to a civilian grand jury proceeding — is scheduled for next month, when a military officer will hear testimony from victims and determine if there is enough evidence to warrant a trial.
